Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 2,189 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 2,189 m of the 3,203 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 1,016 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 15 minutes and covered a distance of 3 nautical miles. The aircraft, an Airbus A320, then departed from runway 02L at ZGGG Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport. The takeoff distance was 2,103 meters, which accounted for 73% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 165 knots.
As the aircraft took off, it encountered local weather conditions with a temperature of 32 degrees Celsius and winds of 4 knots at 120 degrees. The crosswind was 4 knots, while the tailwind was 1 knot. After departing from the airport, the enroute climb started approximately 1 mile northwest of ZGGG Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport. The aircraft climbed from an altitude of 1,052 feet above sea level to 30,338 feet above sea level, an increase of 29,286 feet, in 15 minutes and covering a distance of 89 nautical miles.
Following the climb, the enroute level cruise started 3 miles south of HSC Shaoguan Guitou Airport. This phase of the flight lasted 18 minutes and covered a distance of 122 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its enroute descent, which started 36 miles northeast of ZLEE Leiyang Air Base. The descent from 30,279 feet above sea level to 1,400 feet above sea level, a decrease of 28,879 feet, took 20 minutes and covered a distance of 79 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 18 at ZGHA Changsha Huanghua International Airport was made from the north, with a heading of 177.0 degrees at 4 nautical miles and 1,157 feet above ground level. The landing on runway 18 was successful, with a runway length of 3,203 meters. The threshold height was good, and the threshold speed was well above the target at 151 knots. However, the touchdown point was 625 meters beyond the touchdown zone, and the touchdown speed was a little fast at 132 knots.
The touchdown rate was perfect at -42 feet per minute, but the runway touchdown position was misaligned by 9.1 meters from the centerline. The local weather conditions during landing were a temperature of 29 degrees Celsius and winds of 7 knots at 190 degrees, with a crosswind of 2 knots and a headwind of 7 knots. The total landing distance was 2,133 meters, which accounted for 67% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was slightly misaligned by 9.0 meters from the centerline.
After landing, the aircraft taxiing to the parking from the runway took 4 minutes and covered a distance of less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 300 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 69 minutes. The aircraft used 2,442 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The Airbus A320 aircraft successfully landed at ZGHA Changsha Huanghua International Airport, with a score of 86.5%. The final approach to runway 18 was initiated from the north, heading 177.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,157 feet above ground level.
Upon landing, the aircraft touched down 625 meters beyond the designated touchdown zone, which is a significant deviation from the intended landing spot. The touchdown speed of 132 knots was slightly above the target speed, indicating that the pilot may have been unable to fully arrest the aircraft's descent before touching down. However, the touchdown rate of -42 feet per minute was perfect, indicating a smooth and controlled landing.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were favorable, with a temperature of 29°C and a gentle headwind of 7 knots from a direction of 190°. The crosswind component was minimal, at 2 knots, which suggests that the pilot had a relatively easy time aligning the aircraft with the runway.
Despite the successful landing, there were some areas for improvement. The runway touchdown position was misaligned by 9.1 meters from the centerline, which may have been due to a slight miscalculation of the aircraft's position or a minor deviation from the intended flight path. Additionally, the runway rollout alignment was also slightly misaligned, by 9.0 meters from the centerline.
Overall, the landing was considered successful, but there were some minor deviations from the intended flight path. The pilot's ability to maintain control of the aircraft and execute a smooth touchdown was evident, but there is room for improvement in terms of precision and accuracy.
