Changsha Huanghua International Airport (ZGHA/CSX) is the principal airport serving Changsha, the capital of Hunan province, together with the nearby cities of Zhuzhou and Xiangtan. It is a large, modern international hub with a single very long runway, making it a straightforward if busy destination for a simulator pilot flying into Central China.
Changsha Huanghua International Airport lies in Huanghua Town, Changsha County, and serves as the main gateway for the Greater Changsha Metropolitan Region, covering Changsha, Zhuzhou and Xiangtan. It is operated by Hunan Airport Management Group, which also runs the other airports in the province, and functions as a focus city for China Southern Airlines, Hainan Airlines and Xiamen Air. For a visiting simulator pilot it offers a busy, large-scale Chinese international airport environment with a single, exceptionally long runway and multi-terminal operations.
The airport sits roughly 25 kilometres from downtown Changsha, in Huanghua Town, Changsha County, Hunan province, at coordinates 28.19N 113.218E. As a major international airport it lies within controlled Chinese airspace, with approach control provided on a dedicated frequency for arriving and departing traffic.
The airfield has a single physical runway, 18/36, aligned north-south. It measures 10,484 feet in length, has a hard surface, and is lit for night operations. No ILS is available for this runway.
Radio services are provided on the following frequencies: Approach on 119.65 MHz, ATIS on 128.8 MHz, Ground on 121.75 MHz, and Tower on 118.55 MHz. No instrument landing system is available at the field.
The airport was opened on 29 August 1989, replacing Changsha Datuopu Airport, which had served as a joint military and civil field since 1957 and thereafter reverted to sole military use. Construction of the new airport followed a proposal by the Hunan Provincial Government in October 1984, approved by the State Council, with building work beginning in June 1986. Between 2008 and 2011 the airport underwent major expansion, during which its main runway was lengthened from 2,600 metres to 3,200 metres, and a second terminal building was brought into operation in 2011. In June 2014 the airport gained its first intercontinental route when China Southern Airlines began service to Frankfurt, Germany.
Today the airport operates as a major civil hub for Hunan province, handling substantial domestic and international traffic across two terminal buildings and continuing to expand its infrastructure. It is managed by Hunan Airport Management Group Co., Ltd. As a large controlled international airport, prior permission is required for any visiting flight.
