Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
Two stabilised approach gates, each with seven checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 2,131 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 247 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
Departing from Southwest Florida International Airport (KRSW), the Airbus A320 began its journey by taxiing from the parking area to the runway, a process that took approximately 9 minutes and covered a distance of 2 nautical miles. Upon reaching runway 06, the aircraft initiated its departure roll, utilizing 64% of the 2,336-meter runway to achieve liftoff at a speed of 166 knots. The local weather conditions at the time of departure featured a temperature of 29°C, with a gentle headwind of 3 knots and a crosswind of 2 knots.
As the aircraft climbed to its enroute altitude, it began its ascent from 563 feet above sea level to 35,009 feet, a vertical increase of 34,446 feet over a distance of 129 nautical miles, accomplished within 20 minutes. The enroute level cruise phase commenced overhead Cheryl-Lane Landings Airport (09FD), where the aircraft maintained a steady altitude for 120 minutes, covering a distance of 669 nautical miles. Subsequently, the enroute descent phase began 3 miles southeast of Ragged Island Airport (MD82), during which the aircraft descended from 35,016 feet to 1,001 feet above sea level, a decrease of 34,015 feet over a distance of 188 nautical miles, completed within 33 minutes.
Upon reaching the vicinity of LaGuardia Airport (KLGA), the aircraft initiated its final approach to runway 31, aligning itself with the runway from the southeast at an altitude of 987 feet above ground level. The landing was executed with a threshold speed slightly above the target at 143 knots, and a touchdown distance of 249 meters, which was within the acceptable range. The touchdown speed of 137 knots was a little fast, but the touchdown rate of -314 feet per minute was firm. Following a successful landing, the aircraft taxied to the parking area, a process that took approximately 2 minutes and covered less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance of 994 nautical miles was completed within 149 minutes, utilizing 6,310 kilograms of fuel.
The aircraft touched down on runway 31 at KLGA LaGuardia Airport with a firm touchdown rate of -314 fpm, slightly above the target rate. The touchdown speed of 137 kt was a little fast, but the aircraft maintained good control throughout the landing. The runway touchdown alignment was very good, with the aircraft centered on the runway centerline.
Following a smooth touchdown, the aircraft began its rollout, maintaining excellent alignment with the runway centerline. The total landing distance of 1,172 m was 55% of the runway length, indicating a good balance between stopping distance and runway utilization. The threshold speed of 143 kt was slightly above the target, but the aircraft's deceleration was effective in bringing it to a stop within a reasonable distance.
The overall performance of the landing was excellent, with a score of 98.6%. The approach quality was good, with a stable and controlled descent to the threshold. The threshold height was good, and the aircraft maintained a steady state throughout the approach. The local weather conditions, with a temperature of 11 °C and a headwind of 6 kt, presented a moderate challenge, but the crew's skills and the aircraft's performance ensured a safe and successful landing.
