Know your rotation speed
A typical trainer rotates in the mid-50s of knots - a 172 at around 55 KIAS, climbing out at a Vy in the low 70s, though check your own POH rather than memorising Cessna's numbers - and the transferable rule is that Vr sits just above the stall speed in takeoff configuration. Rotate early because "it felt ready" and the aircraft lifts off inside ground effect, where induced drag is reduced, then climbs out of it into more drag. On a marginal-performance day the result is an aircraft that lifts off and then refuses to climb, sagging back towards the runway.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 1,678 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,678 m of the 2,227 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 461 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking area to the runway, which took 8 minutes and covered a distance of 3 nautical miles. The aircraft, a Boeing 737-700, then departed from runway 08 at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (KPHX). The takeoff distance was 1,152 meters, which accounted for 36% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 142 knots, and the local weather conditions at the time of departure were a temperature of 19 degrees Celsius, with a wind speed of 4 knots at 110 degrees.
As the aircraft climbed away from the airport, it began its enroute climb, which started overhead KPHX. The climb took 13 minutes and covered a distance of 126 nautical miles, during which the aircraft ascended from an altitude of 2,156 feet above sea level to 38,280 feet above sea level, an increase of 36,124 feet. The enroute level cruise then began 4 miles south east of Valle, Arizona, and lasted for 32 minutes, covering a distance of 782 nautical miles.
The enroute descent started 5 miles east of Wilbur, Washington, and took 20 minutes to descend from an altitude of 37,873 feet above sea level to 2,531 feet above sea level, a decrease of 35,342 feet. The descent covered a distance of 132 nautical miles. The final approach to runway 34 at Kelowna International Airport (CYLW) was made from the south, with the aircraft heading 356.0 degrees at an altitude of 1,130 feet above ground level and a distance of 3 nautical miles from the runway.
The landing on runway 34 was successful, with the aircraft touching down at a speed of 126 knots, which was slightly above the target speed. The touchdown distance was 461 meters, and the runway touchdown alignment was perfect. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were a temperature of -6 degrees Celsius, with a wind speed of 9 knots at 9 degrees. The crosswind was 2 knots, and the headwind was 8 knots.
After landing, the aircraft taxied to the parking area, which took 3 minutes and covered a distance of less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 1,049 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 76 minutes. The aircraft used 6,295 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The Boeing 737-700 aircraft successfully landed at Kelowna International Airport (CYLW) on runway 34. The final approach was initiated from the south, with the aircraft heading 356.0° at a distance of 3 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,130 feet above ground level (agl). The aircraft maintained a good threshold height, which is a critical aspect of a safe landing.
Upon touchdown, the aircraft's threshold speed was slightly above the target speed of 132 knots, registering at 133 knots. However, the touchdown distance of 461 meters was considered good, indicating that the aircraft was able to slow down effectively after touchdown. The touchdown speed of 126 knots was a little fast, which may have contributed to a fair touchdown rate of -256 feet per minute (fpm). Despite this, the runway touchdown alignment was perfect, demonstrating the pilot's skill and control during the landing.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of -6°C and a wind speed of 9 knots from 9°. The crosswind component was minimal at 2 knots, while the headwind component was 8 knots. These conditions did not appear to significantly impact the landing, with the aircraft maintaining a stable approach and touchdown.
The total landing distance of 1,593 meters was 72% of the runway length, indicating that the aircraft was able to stop within a reasonable distance after touchdown. The runway rollout alignment was also perfect, demonstrating the pilot's ability to maintain control and stability during the landing roll. Overall, the landing was considered successful, with the aircraft touching down safely and coming to a stop within a reasonable distance.
