Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

Two stabilised approach gates, each with five checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 2,620 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 615 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The Airbus A320 taxied from the parking area to runway 23L at Düsseldorf Airport (EDDL) in 12 minutes, covering a distance of 2 nm.
During the departure roll on runway 23L, the aircraft accelerated through a take-off distance of 1,497 m, representing 56 % of the runway length, and lifted off at 157 kt; ambient temperature was 24 °C with a wind of 20 kt from 230°, a 1 kt cross-wind component and a 20 kt head-wind.
The climb commenced overhead Düsseldorf, climbing from 1,124 ft asl to 38,238 ft asl - a gain of 37,114 ft - in 22 minutes while traversing 138 nm.
The first cruise segment began 5 mi west of Bergen aan Zee and continued for 75 minutes, during which the aircraft covered 296 nm at level flight.
Descent number one started 17 mi north of Prestatyn, descending from 38,408 ft asl to 8,120 ft asl - a loss of 30,287 ft - in 14 minutes and covering 77 nm.
A second cruise phase was initiated 14 mi north-east of Loughshinny, lasting 7 minutes and encompassing 29 nm of level flight.
The subsequent descent began 15 mi east of Dalkey, dropping from 7,696 ft asl to 1,543 ft asl - a reduction of 6,153 ft - in 7 minutes and spanning 20 nm.
For the final approach the aircraft aligned with runway 28L at Dublin Airport (EIDW) from the east, flying a heading of 275.0° at 4 nm and 1,326 ft agl; local conditions were 16 °C, wind 17 kt from 290°, with a 4 kt cross-wind and a 17 kt head-wind.
Landing on runway 28L, whose length is 2,619 m, the threshold speed was recorded at 138 kt, slightly above target. Touchdown occurred 223 m beyond the touchdown zone at a speed of 130 kt, with a vertical speed of minus 169 fpm and a lateral deviation of 5.3 m from the centreline; the total landing distance measured 1,449 m, equivalent to 55 % of the runway.
Runway rollout alignment was reported as very good, with the aircraft remaining on the centreline throughout the deceleration phase.
The aircraft taxied from the runway to the parking stand in a further 12 minutes, traveling 1 nm.
In total the flight covered 571 nm, required 118 minutes of elapsed time, and consumed 4,450 kg of fuel.
The final approach was flown on a heading of 275.0° from the east, intercepting the glide path at 4 nm and 1,326 ft AGL. Ambient temperature was 16 °C with a wind of 17 kt from 290°, providing a 17 kt headwind and a 4 kt crosswind component. The aircraft maintained the prescribed approach configuration and speed throughout the segment.
At threshold the height was reported as good and the threshold speed was slightly above target at 138 kt. The flare was initiated in accordance with standard technique, transitioning the aircraft onto the runway with the expected descent profile.
Touchdown occurred 223 m beyond the designated touchdown zone. The touchdown speed was a little fast at 130 kt, while the vertical rate was good at -169 fpm. Lateral alignment was slightly off centreline by 5.3 m. The total landing distance measured 1,449 m, representing 55 % of the 2,619 m runway length.
Rollout alignment was very good, and the aircraft decelerated safely to a stop within the remaining runway length.
To tighten future performances, aim to reduce the touchdown speed to the target value and adjust the flare point to achieve touchdown within the touchdown zone, which will also improve centreline alignment. Maintaining the current approach configuration will preserve the strong rollout alignment already demonstrated.
