Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 5,089 ft of the approach.
Plan view — the first 5,089 ft of the 6,573 ft runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 3,236 ft past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 10 minutes and covered a distance of 2 nautical miles. The aircraft, a Boeing 737-700, then departed from runway 13L at KDAL Dallas Love Field, with a takeoff distance of 2,033 feet, which was 28% of the runway length. The liftoff speed was 145 knots.
As the aircraft climbed to a higher altitude, it encountered local weather conditions of a temperature of 71°F and winds of 2 knots at 170°. The crosswind was 1 knot, and the headwind was 2 knots. The enroute climb started overhead KDAL Dallas Love Field, with the aircraft ascending from 1,492 feet above sea level to 33,050 feet above sea level, an increase of 31,558 feet in 13 minutes, covering a distance of 77 nautical miles.
The enroute descent started 4 miles east of Mart, Texas, with the aircraft descending from 33,052 feet above sea level to 8,788 feet above sea level, a decrease of 24,264 feet in 13 minutes, covering a distance of 81 nautical miles. The aircraft then entered a level cruise, starting 3 miles southeast of XS68 Sky Lane Ranch Airport Chappell Hill, and lasted for 11 minutes, covering 46 nautical miles.
The enroute descent started 1 mile northwest of Beasley, with the aircraft descending from 6,393 feet above sea level to 5,023 feet above sea level, a decrease of 1,370 feet in 2 minutes, covering a distance of 7 nautical miles. The aircraft then entered another level cruise, starting overhead T54 Lane Rosenberg, and lasted for 10 minutes, covering 42 nautical miles.
The enroute descent started 2 miles south of 37TE Johnnie Volk Field Hitchcock, with the aircraft descending from 5,005 feet above sea level to 1,328 feet above sea level, a decrease of 3,677 feet in 6 minutes, covering a distance of 20 nautical miles. The final approach to runway 31L at KHOU William P Hobby Airport was from the southeast, heading 314.0° at 4 nautical miles and 1,273 feet above ground level.
The landing on runway 31L at KHOU William P Hobby Airport, with a runway length of 6,573 feet, was notable for the threshold height being above target, and the threshold speed being well above target at 138 knots. The touchdown point was very long, using more than 50% of the available runway, and the touchdown speed was a little fast at 121 knots. The touchdown rate was fair at -241 feet per minute, and the runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 20 feet from the centreline.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were a temperature of 70°F and winds of 2 knots at 60°. The crosswind was 1 knot, and the headwind was 0 knots. The total landing distance was 4,816 feet, which was 73% of the runway length. The runway rollout alignment was slightly misaligned by 29 feet from the centreline.
The taxiing period from the runway to the parking took 7 minutes and covered a distance of less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 281 nautical miles, taking 74 minutes, and the aircraft used 5,629 pounds of fuel.
The Boeing 737-700 aircraft successfully landed at KHOU William P Hobby Airport, but the landing was not without some notable issues. The final approach to runway 31L was initiated from the southeast, heading 314.0° at 4 nautical miles and 1,273 feet above ground level (agl). The aircraft touched down on the runway, but the touchdown point was quite far down the runway, using more than 50% of the available 6,573-foot runway length.
The touchdown speed of 121 knots was slightly above the target speed, indicating that the pilot may have been unable to fully arrest the aircraft's descent before touching down. The touchdown rate of -241 feet per minute (fpm) was considered fair, suggesting that the pilot was able to maintain some control over the aircraft's descent. However, the threshold height at 67 feet agl was above the target, indicating that the aircraft may have been slightly high on final approach.
The threshold speed was also well above the target at 138 knots, which may have contributed to the long touchdown point. The runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 20 feet from the centerline, which could have been due to a combination of factors including wind, pilot error, or aircraft performance.
The local weather conditions at the time of the landing were relatively calm, with a temperature of 70°F and a wind of 2 knots at 60°. The crosswind was minimal at 1 knot, and there was no headwind. Despite the favorable weather conditions, the pilot was still unable to achieve a perfect landing.
The total landing distance of 4,816 feet was 73% of the available runway length, which is slightly above average. The runway rollout alignment was also slightly misaligned by 29 feet from the centerline, which could have been due to the same factors that contributed to the initial touchdown position misalignment.
Overall, while the landing was not perfect, the pilot was able to safely bring the aircraft to the ground without any major issues. However, there are areas for improvement, including reducing the touchdown speed and improving the alignment of the aircraft on final approach.
