Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 7,323 ft of the approach.
Plan view — the first 7,323 ft of the 10,002 ft runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 4,580 ft past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a 20-minute taxiing period from the parking area to the runway, covering a distance of 6 nautical miles. The aircraft, a Boeing 737-800, then departed from runway 07 at KDEN Denver International Airport. The takeoff distance was 5,870 feet, which accounted for 49% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 150 knots.
The local weather conditions at the time of departure were characterized by a temperature of 58°F and winds of 5 knots at 70°. The crosswind was 2 knots, while the headwind was 5 knots. The aircraft began its enroute climb 1 mile south of KDEN, rising from an altitude of 6,388 feet above sea level to 28,248 feet above sea level, an increase of 21,860 feet in 11 minutes and covering a distance of 51 nautical miles.
Following the initial climb, the aircraft entered a level cruise phase, which started 9 miles northeast of the 77CO UCH-MHS Memorial North Helipad in Colorado Springs. This phase lasted for 33 minutes and covered a distance of 60 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its descent 5 miles southwest of KASE Aspen-Pitkin County Airport, descending from 28,248 feet to 12,996 feet above sea level, a decrease of 15,252 feet in 8 minutes and covering a distance of 52 nautical miles.
The aircraft entered another level cruise phase, this time overhead the 39CO Flying M Ranch Airport in Montrose, which lasted for 32 minutes and covered a distance of 23 nautical miles. The descent phase that followed began 8 miles northwest of Ouray, with the aircraft descending from 13,055 feet to 7,215 feet above sea level, a decrease of 5,839 feet in 6 minutes and covering a distance of 20 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 35 at KMTJ Montrose Regional Airport was made from the south, with the aircraft heading 352.0° at 4 nautical miles and 1,506 feet above ground level. The landing was made on runway 35, which had a length of 10,002 feet. The threshold height was good, but the threshold speed was above the target at 149 knots.
The touchdown point was 3,246 feet beyond the touchdown zone, with a touchdown speed of 150 knots, which was considered fast. The touchdown rate was good at -157 feet per minute. However, the runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 18 feet from the centerline. The total landing distance was 7,089 feet, accounting for 71% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was also slightly misaligned by 33 feet from the centerline.
The taxiing period from the runway to the parking area took 7 minutes and covered a distance of 2 nautical miles. The total flight distance was 218 nautical miles, with a total flight time of 66 minutes and a fuel consumption of 6,420 pounds.
The Boeing 737-800 aircraft successfully landed at KMTJ Montrose Regional Airport, but with some notable deviations from the ideal landing performance. The final approach was initiated from the south, heading 352.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,506 feet above ground level (agl). The aircraft touched down on runway 35, which has a length of 10,002 feet.
The threshold height was satisfactory, but the threshold speed was significantly above the target speed, reaching 149 knots. This indicates that the aircraft may have been descending too quickly or the pilots may have been unable to slow down sufficiently before touchdown. The touchdown point was located 3,246 feet beyond the designated touchdown zone, which suggests that the aircraft may have landed slightly too far down the runway.
The touchdown speed of 150 knots was also faster than the ideal speed, which could have resulted in a longer landing distance. However, the touchdown rate of -157 feet per minute (fpm) was good, indicating that the aircraft was able to absorb the impact of touchdown smoothly. Unfortunately, the runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 18 feet from the centreline, which could have affected the aircraft's ability to stop safely.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 52°F, which is relatively cool. The total landing distance of 7,089 feet was 71% of the runway length, which is within the acceptable range. However, the runway rollout alignment was also slightly misaligned by 33 feet from the centreline, which could have resulted in a longer rollout distance and increased the risk of overrunning the runway.
Overall, while the landing was successful, there were several areas for improvement, including reducing the threshold speed, improving the touchdown speed, and ensuring that the aircraft is aligned with the centreline during touchdown and rollout.
