Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

Two stabilised approach gates, each with five checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
At the 500 ft gate: sink rate above what the glideslope needed.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,828 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,828 m of the 2,739 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 666 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The Airbus A321 taxied from the parking area to runway 23R at KRDU, a movement that required 11 minutes and covered 3 nm.
During the departure roll on runway 23R, the aircraft used a takeoff distance of 1,856 m, representing 61 % of the runway, and achieved a liftoff speed of 158 kt. Ambient conditions were a temperature of 32 °C, wind 12 kt from 210°, with a 3 kt crosswind component and an 11 kt headwind.
Climb commenced 1 mile southwest of KRDU, with the airplane ascending from 1,294 ft asl to 33,657 ft asl, an increase of 32,363 ft achieved in 23 minutes while covering 140 nm.
Level cruise began 1 mile east of Shelby, lasting 14 minutes and extending over 110 nm.
Descent started 3 miles northeast of Homer, during which the aircraft descended from 34,344 ft asl to 2,311 ft asl, a loss of 32,033 ft in 19 minutes and covering another 110 nm.
The final approach to runway 09R at KATL was executed from the west, on a heading of 90.0°, at 4 nm and 1,274 ft agl.
Landing on runway 09R, which is 2,739 m long, occurred with a threshold speed of 142 kt. The touchdown point was 252 m beyond the touchdown zone, the aircraft touched down at 130 kt, and the vertical speed was minus 116 fpm. Lateral alignment was off by 4.4 m from the centreline. Weather at the time was a temperature of 27 °C, wind 11 kt from 180°, with an 11 kt crosswind and no headwind.
Runway rollout covered a distance of 1,750 m, equal to 64 % of the runway, and alignment during the rollout was reported as very good.
After landing, the aircraft taxied to the parking area in 5 minutes, traveling less than 1 nm.
In total, the flight covered 370 nm, took 72 minutes, and consumed 3,310 kg of fuel.
The Airbus A321 established a final approach to runway 09R at KATL from the west, maintaining a heading of 90.0° at 4 nm and 1,274 ft agl, with temperature 27 °C, wind 11 kt from 180°, a cross-wind component of 11 kt and no head-wind.
At threshold the aircraft presented a good threshold height and a good threshold speed of 142 kt, and the flare was executed in accordance with the approach profile.
Touchdown occurred 252 m beyond the touchdown zone with a good touchdown speed of 130 kt, a smooth touchdown rate of minus 116 fpm, and the runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 4.4 m from the centreline.
The rollout covered a total landing distance of 1,750 m, representing 64 % of the 2,739 m runway, and runway rollout alignment was very good.
Refine the touchdown point to reduce the 252 m overshoot and tighten lateral alignment to eliminate the 4.4 m offset, which will further improve the already strong 97.3 % score.
