Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 5,000 ft of the approach.
Plan view — the first 5,000 ft of the 5,207 ft runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 968 ft touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with the aircraft, a Black Square Starship with the registration N786BP, taxiing from the parking area to the runway at Savannah Hilton Head International Airport (KSAV). This process took 6 minutes and covered a distance of 2 nautical miles. The departure roll took place on runway 10, and the aircraft lifted off after covering 4,013 feet, which was 43% of the runway length. The liftoff speed was 113 knots.
As the aircraft climbed away from the airport, it encountered local weather conditions of 72°F temperature and a 5-knot wind blowing from 179°. The crosswind component was 5 knots, while the headwind component was 0 knots. The enroute climb started overhead KSAV, and the aircraft ascended from 753 feet above sea level to 28,391 feet, an increase of 27,638 feet, in 13 minutes and covering 33 nautical miles.
The enroute level cruise began 4 miles east of Barbour Island Airport (72GA), and it lasted for 109 minutes, covering a distance of 281 nautical miles. The aircraft then started its enroute descent 1 mile east of Jupiter Inlet Beach Colony, and it descended from 29,000 feet to 263 feet, a decrease of 28,737 feet, in 14 minutes and covering 35 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 05 at Boca Raton Airport (KBCT) was made from the southwest, heading 44.0°, at 1 nautical mile and 237 feet above ground level. The landing took place on a runway with a length of 5,207 feet, and the threshold height was good. The threshold speed was slightly above the target at 118 knots, but the touchdown distance was good at 963 feet, and the touchdown speed was 108 knots, which was good. The touchdown rate was smooth at -109 feet per minute, and the runway touchdown alignment was perfect.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were 78°F temperature and a 6-knot wind blowing from 100°. The crosswind component was 5 knots, while the headwind component was 4 knots. The total landing distance was 2,802 feet, which was 54% of the runway length. The runway rollout alignment was also perfect. The aircraft then taxied to the parking area, which took less than 1 minute and covered less than 1 nautical mile.
In total, the flight covered a distance of 353 nautical miles and lasted for 81 minutes, using 1,176 pounds of fuel.
The aircraft, Black Square Starship N786BP, successfully landed at KBCT Boca Raton Airport with a score of 99.8%. The final approach to runway 05 was initiated from the southwest, with a heading of 44.0° at 1 nautical mile and 237 feet above ground level (agl). The aircraft demonstrated precise control and navigation skills, aligning perfectly with the runway during the approach.
Upon touchdown, the aircraft's threshold height was good, and the threshold speed was slightly above the target at 118 knots. The touchdown distance of 963 feet was within acceptable limits, and the touchdown speed of 108 knots was also good. The touchdown rate was smooth at -109 feet per minute (fpm), indicating a controlled descent. The runway touchdown alignment was perfect, showcasing the pilot's expertise in navigating the aircraft to the runway.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were favorable, with a temperature of 78°F and a wind speed of 6 knots at 100°. The crosswind component was 5 knots, while the headwind component was 4 knots. These conditions did not pose a significant challenge to the pilot, and the aircraft handled them smoothly.
The total landing distance of 2,802 feet was 54% of the runway length, which is a relatively short distance considering the aircraft's size and weight. The runway rollout alignment was also perfect, indicating that the pilot maintained control of the aircraft during the rollout phase. Overall, the landing was a success, with the aircraft demonstrating excellent handling and control skills.
