Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 3,798 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 365 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with the Airbus A320 taxiing from the parking area to the runway at Jorge Chavez International Airport, taking 13 minutes and covering a distance of 3 nautical miles. The aircraft then departed from runway 16, with a takeoff distance of 1,855 meters, which accounted for 64% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 166 knots, and the local weather conditions were characterized by a temperature of 20 degrees Celsius, a wind speed of 10 knots at 170 degrees, resulting in a 3-knot crosswind and a 10-knot headwind.
As the aircraft climbed to its cruising altitude, it started its enroute climb overhead Carmen De La Legua Reynoso, Callao, Peru, at an altitude of 1,117 feet above sea level. The climb continued for 25 minutes, covering a distance of 140 nautical miles, and resulted in an increase of 36,952 feet to an altitude of 38,069 feet above sea level.
The enroute level cruise started 3 miles south of Chuquis, Region de Huanuco, Peru, and lasted for 111 minutes, covering a distance of 837 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its enroute descent 2 miles south east of Espinal, Departamento de Tolima, Colombia, and descended from an altitude of 38,627 feet above sea level to 17,717 feet above sea level in just 7 minutes, covering a distance of 48 nautical miles.
The enroute level cruise resumed 2 miles north west of SKFV El Santuario Airport Ambalema, Departamento de Tolima, Colombia, and lasted for 7 minutes, covering a distance of 35 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its final descent 4 miles south west of Topaipi, Departamento de Cundinamarca, Colombia, and descended from an altitude of 17,717 feet above sea level to 9,643 feet above sea level in 9 minutes, covering a distance of 35 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 14L at El Dorado International Airport was made from the north west, with a heading of 127.0 degrees at 4 nautical miles and 1,277 feet above ground level. The landing was made on runway 14L, which had a length of 3,798 meters. The threshold height was good, but the threshold speed was slightly above the target at 137 knots.
The touchdown point was 398 meters beyond the touchdown zone, and the touchdown speed was 136 knots, which was a little fast. The touchdown rate was hard at -444 feet per minute, and the runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 4.8 meters from the centerline. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 15 degrees Celsius, a wind speed of 6 knots at 120 degrees, resulting in a 1-knot crosswind and a 6-knot headwind.
The total landing distance was 1,828 meters, which accounted for 48% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was very good. The aircraft then taxied to the parking area from the runway, taking 7 minutes and covering a distance of less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 1,104 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 177 minutes, with a fuel consumption of 7,037 kilograms.
The Airbus A320 successfully landed at SKBO El Dorado International Airport, achieving a score of 95.7%. The aircraft approached the runway from the northwest, heading 127.0° at 4 nautical miles and 1,277 feet above ground level (agl). The final approach was made to runway 14L, which has a length of 3,798 meters.
Upon landing, the aircraft touched down slightly beyond the touchdown zone, 398 meters down the runway. The touchdown speed of 136 knots was slightly above the target speed, indicating that the pilot may have been able to make adjustments to reduce the speed before touchdown. However, the touchdown rate was hard, at -444 feet per minute (fpm), which may have contributed to the slightly fast touchdown speed.
The runway touchdown position was also slightly misaligned from the centerline, by 4.8 meters. This may have been due to a combination of factors, including wind and pilot error. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were relatively calm, with a temperature of 15°C and a wind speed of 6 knots from 120°. The crosswind component was minimal, at 1 knot, while the headwind component was 6 knots.
The total landing distance was 1,828 meters, which is 48% of the runway length. This is a relatively short landing distance, indicating that the pilot was able to make a smooth and controlled approach. The runway rollout alignment was also very good, suggesting that the pilot was able to maintain control of the aircraft during the rollout phase.
Overall, the landing was successful, but there were some areas for improvement, including reducing the touchdown speed and improving the runway alignment. However, the pilot's ability to make a smooth and controlled approach, despite some challenges, is a testament to their skill and experience.
