Work on the flare
Arrive slow and the sink rate at the threshold is already above schedule, the flare is short because there is no energy to extend it, and the touchdown is hard in a way that feels exactly like a late flare. Diagnosing a slow arrival as a late flare is the catastrophic misread: you respond by flaring earlier, which bleeds more speed, which makes the next one worse. The tiebreaker is threshold speed against VRef, not feel. Never diagnose a flare without it.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 152 m above the runway. The 305 m gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 2,456 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 2,456 m of the 3,894 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 678 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 9 minutes and covered a distance of 2 nautical miles. The aircraft, a Boeing 737-800, then departed from runway 25 at the Falcone–Borsellino Airport, also known as LICJ. The takeoff distance was 1,496 meters, which is 50% of the runway length. The liftoff speed was 152 knots.
The local weather conditions at the time of takeoff were characterized by a temperature of 31 degrees Celsius and a wind speed of 7 knots at 39 degrees. This resulted in a crosswind of 3 knots and a tailwind of 7 knots. The aircraft then began its enroute climb, starting 1 mile northwest of Cinisi, Sicilia, Italy. The climb took 19 minutes and covered a distance of 112 nautical miles, with the aircraft ascending from an altitude of 327 meters above sea level to 10,683 meters above sea level, an increase of 10,356 meters.
After reaching the cruising altitude, the aircraft entered a level cruise phase, which lasted for 2 minutes and covered a distance of 13 nautical miles. This phase started 47 miles south of Ventotene, Lazio, Italy. The enroute descent then began 35 miles southwest of Ventotene, and the aircraft descended from 10,678 meters above sea level to 393 meters above sea level, a decrease of 10,284.3 meters, in 30 minutes and covering a distance of 102 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 16L at the Rome–Fiumicino Leonardo da Vinci International Airport, also known as LIRF, was made from the north, with the aircraft heading 162.0 degrees at an altitude of 385.7 meters above ground level and a distance of 4 nautical miles from the runway. The landing was made on runway 16L, which has a length of 3,894 meters. The threshold height was good, but the threshold speed was slightly above the target at 146 knots.
The touchdown point was 262 meters beyond the touchdown zone, and the touchdown speed was 136 knots, which was a little fast. The touchdown rate was fair at -1.3 meters per second. The runway touchdown position was misaligned by 10.2 meters from the centerline. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 24 degrees Celsius and a wind speed of 2 knots at 60 degrees, resulting in a crosswind of 2 knots and a headwind of 0 knots.
The total landing distance was 2,376 meters, which is 61% of the runway length. The runway rollout alignment was slightly misaligned by 8.9 meters from the centerline. The taxiing period from the runway to the parking took 7 minutes and covered a distance of 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 237 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 69 minutes. The aircraft used 2,775 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The Boeing 737-800 aircraft successfully landed on runway 16L at LIRF Rome–Fiumicino Leonardo da Vinci International Airport, achieving a score of 91.2%. The final approach was initiated from the north, heading 162.0° at an altitude of 385.7 meters above ground level (agl) and a distance of 4 nautical miles from the runway.
The aircraft touched down 262 meters beyond the touchdown zone, which is slightly off-target. The touchdown speed of 136 knots was a bit faster than the target speed, indicating that the pilot may have applied a bit too much reverse thrust or failed to maintain the optimal descent rate. However, the touchdown rate of -1.3 meters per second was considered fair, suggesting that the pilot managed to control the aircraft's descent effectively.
The runway touchdown position was misaligned by 10.2 meters from the centerline, which may have been due to a slight deviation in the aircraft's heading or a miscalculation of the wind drift. The local weather conditions were favorable, with a temperature of 24°C and a light wind of 2 knots at 60°, resulting in a negligible crosswind component.
The total landing distance of 2,376 meters was 61% of the runway length, which is a relatively short distance considering the aircraft's size and weight. However, the runway rollout alignment was slightly misaligned by 8.9 meters from the centerline, indicating that the pilot may have applied a bit too much brake or failed to maintain the optimal alignment during the rollout phase.
Overall, the landing was considered successful, but there were some minor deviations from the optimal performance. The pilot's skills and experience were evident in their ability to control the aircraft's descent and touchdown, but there is room for improvement in terms of precision and alignment during the rollout phase.
