MY FS FLIGHTS
Flight Score
Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 2,140 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 914 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with taxiing from the parking area to the runway, which took 6 minutes and covered a distance of 3 nautical miles. The aircraft, a Cessna C172, then departed from runway 05 at KSPA Spartanburg Downtown Memorial Airport. The takeoff distance was 348 meters, which accounted for 22% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 57 knots.
As the aircraft took off, it encountered local weather conditions with a temperature of 16°C and a wind speed of 1 knot at 270°. The crosswind and tailwind were both 1 knot, resulting in a relatively calm takeoff environment. The enroute climb started overhead KSPA Spartanburg Downtown Memorial Airport, where the aircraft climbed from 1,026 feet above sea level to 2,110 feet, an increase of 1,084 feet in 4 minutes and covering 6 nautical miles.
The enroute level cruise started 2 miles west of Converse, South Carolina, and lasted 10 minutes, covering 8 nautical miles. The aircraft then began another climb 1 mile south east of SC36 Emery Airport Greer, where it climbed from 1,391 feet to 3,407 feet, an increase of 2,016 feet in 4 minutes and covering 7 nautical miles. The enroute level cruise started 3 miles south of 56NC Wheat Field Tryon, North Carolina, and lasted 4 minutes, covering 8 nautical miles.
As the aircraft continued its journey, it began a descent 2 miles west of Campobello, South Carolina, where it descended from 3,075 feet to 2,002 feet, a decrease of 1,073 feet in 2 minutes and covering 4 nautical miles. The enroute level cruise started 4 miles north west of KOAG Landrum Airport Landrum, South Carolina, and lasted 8 minutes, covering 22 nautical miles. The aircraft then began another climb 1 mile east of SC75 Oolenoy Valley Airport Pickens, where it climbed from 1,483 feet to 2,357 feet, an increase of 874 feet in 2 minutes and covering 3 nautical miles.
The enroute level cruise started 2 miles south west of SC75 Oolenoy Valley Airport Pickens and lasted 2 minutes, covering 29 nautical miles. The aircraft then began another climb 1 mile south east of 1SC3 Stol-It Farm, where it climbed from 2,348 feet to 3,405 feet, an increase of 1,057 feet in 4 minutes and covering 55 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 35 at KAVL Asheville Regional Airport was from the south east, heading 340.0° at 4 nautical miles and 1,234 feet above ground level. The landing on runway 35 was successful, with a touchdown point 436 meters beyond the touchdown zone. The touchdown speed was 37 knots, and the touchdown rate was excellent at -59 feet per minute. However, the runway touchdown position was excessively misaligned by 115.1 meters from the centreline.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were a temperature of 15°C and a wind speed of 1 knot at 270°, with a crosswind of 1 knot and a headwind of 0 knots. The total landing distance was 1,065 meters, which accounted for 50% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was also excessively misaligned by 114.9 meters from the centreline.
The taxiing from the runway to the parking area took 1 minute and covered less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 150 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 48 minutes. The aircraft used 29 kilograms of fuel during the flight
The Cessna C172 aircraft successfully landed at KAVL Asheville Regional Airport, but the landing was not without its challenges. The pilot's final approach to runway 35 from the southeast, heading 340.0° at 4 nm and 1,234 ft above ground level (agl), was a critical phase of the flight. The aircraft's speed and altitude were well within the target parameters, but the threshold height at 76 ft agl was significantly above the target, indicating a slightly higher-than-desired approach.
Upon landing, the pilot's speed was well below the target, at 46 kn, which necessitated caution to avoid stalling the aircraft. However, the touchdown speed of 37 kn was good, and the touchdown rate of -59 fpm was excellent, indicating a smooth and controlled descent. The touchdown point was 436 m beyond the touchdown zone, which is a significant deviation from the ideal landing spot.
The runway touchdown position was excessively misaligned by 115.1 m from the centreline, which could have resulted in a longer rollout distance and increased the risk of veering off the runway. The local weather conditions, with a temperature of 15 °C and a wind of 1 kn at 270°, were relatively calm, with a negligible crosswind and headwind. The total landing distance of 1,065 m was 50% of the runway length, which is a reasonable distance considering the aircraft's size and weight.
The runway rollout alignment was also excessively misaligned by 114.9 m from the centreline, which could have resulted in a longer rollout distance and increased the risk of veering off the runway. Overall, while the landing was successful, there were several areas for improvement, including a more precise approach and a better alignment with the runway centreline during rollout.
