Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
Two stabilised approach gates, each with seven checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,658 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,658 m of the 2,279 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 485 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
KLGA LaGuardia Airport's runway 13 was the departure point for the Boeing 737-800 as it began its journey. Taxiing from the parking area to the runway took approximately 5 minutes, covering a distance of 1 nautical mile. With a local temperature of 6 °C and a wind of 7 kt at 69 °, the aircraft took off, utilizing 55% of the 1,162-meter runway. The liftoff speed was 152 kt, and the aircraft quickly gained altitude.
As the aircraft climbed from 1,030 feet above sea level to 35,658 feet, it covered a distance of 154 nautical miles in 14 minutes, an increase of 34,628 feet. The enroute climb phase concluded overhead East Elmhurst, New York. The aircraft then entered a level cruise phase, lasting 20 minutes and covering 488 nautical miles, before beginning its descent near Caledonia, Michigan. The descent phase saw the aircraft decrease its altitude from 35,984 feet to 1,974 feet in 20 minutes, covering 135 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 27R at KORD Chicago O'Hare International Airport was initiated from the east, with the aircraft maintaining a heading of 270.0 ° at 4 nautical miles and 1,282 feet above ground level. The landing was executed with a threshold speed slightly above target at 153 kt, and the touchdown point was 76 meters beyond the touchdown zone. The touchdown speed was a little fast at 150 kt, but the touchdown rate was smooth at -126 fpm. The runway touchdown alignment was very good, and the runway rollout alignment was perfect. The total landing distance was 1,584 meters, utilizing 70% of the 2,279-meter runway. Taxiing to the parking area took 10 minutes, covering 5 nautical miles. The total flight distance was 789 nautical miles, taking 68 minutes, and the aircraft used 6,286 kilograms of fuel.
The Boeing 737-800 touched down on runway 27R at KORD Chicago O'Hare International Airport with a score of 99.7%. The aircraft approached the runway from the east, heading 270.0° at 4 nautical miles and 1,282 feet above ground level. The final approach was characterized by good quality, with a smooth descent and a threshold height that was well within acceptable limits. However, the threshold speed was slightly above the target at 153 knots, indicating a slight deviation from the optimal landing configuration.
The aircraft touched down 76 meters beyond the touchdown zone, with a touchdown speed of 150 knots, which was a little fast. Nevertheless, the touchdown rate was smooth at -126 feet per minute, indicating a well-controlled descent. The runway touchdown alignment was very good, with the aircraft centered on the runway. The local weather conditions, with a temperature of 17°C and a wind of 11 knots at 190°, contributed to a relatively straightforward landing. The crosswind component was 11 knots, while the headwind component was 2 knots.
The total landing distance was 1,584 meters, which accounted for 70% of the runway length. The runway rollout alignment was perfect, with the aircraft maintaining its centerline alignment throughout the rollout phase. Overall, the landing was characterized by good approach quality, smooth touchdown characteristics, and excellent runway alignment, resulting in a high score of 99.7%.
