Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 1,873 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,873 m of the 2,584 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 934 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with the Airbus A320 taxiing from the parking area to the runway at RPVM Mactan Cebu International Airport, a process that took 11 minutes and covered a distance of 2 nautical miles. The aircraft then departed from runway 04, with a takeoff distance of 1,397 meters, which accounted for 42% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 147 knots.
As the aircraft took off, it encountered local weather conditions of 31 degrees Celsius and a wind speed of 6 knots at 119 degrees. The crosswind was 6 knots, while the headwind was 2 knots. After departing from the airport, the enroute climb started approximately 1 mile north east of RPVM Mactan Cebu International Airport, Lapu-Lapu City, in the Central Visayas region of the Philippines. The aircraft climbed from an altitude of 1,046 feet above sea level to 34,732 feet above sea level, an increase of 33,686 feet, in 19 minutes and covering a distance of 118 nautical miles.
The enroute level cruise began 25 miles west of Sipalay, in the Western Visayas region of the Philippines, and lasted for 11 minutes, covering a distance of 86 nautical miles. The aircraft then started its enroute descent 38 miles west of RPCG Cagayancillo Airport, Cagayancillo, in the Mimaropa region of the Philippines. The descent from 35,390 feet above sea level to 1,271 feet above sea level, a decrease of 34,119 feet, took 17 minutes and covered a distance of 103 nautical miles.
The aircraft then entered another enroute level cruise, this time starting 3 miles east of RPVP Puerto Princesa International Airport, Puerto Princesa, in the Mimaropa region of the Philippines. This cruise lasted for 4 minutes and covered a distance of 5 nautical miles. The final approach to runway 09 at RPVP Puerto Princesa International Airport was made from the west, with a heading of 88.0 degrees at 1 nautical mile and 519 feet above ground level.
The aircraft landed on runway 09, which had a length of 2,584 meters. The threshold height at 65 feet above ground level was above the target, while the threshold speed was good at 136 knots. The touchdown point was 514 meters beyond the touchdown zone, with a touchdown speed of 122 knots, which was good. However, the touchdown rate was fair at -248 feet per minute. The runway touchdown position was misaligned by 9.5 meters from the centreline.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were 28 degrees Celsius and a wind speed of 10 knots at 90 degrees. The crosswind was 0 knots, while the headwind was 10 knots. The total landing distance was 1,789 meters, which accounted for 69% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was slightly misaligned by 9.4 meters from the centreline. After landing, the aircraft taxiied to the parking area, a process that took 2 minutes and covered a distance of less than 1 nautical mile.
The total flight distance was 319 nautical miles, which was covered in 70 minutes. The aircraft used 2,791 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The Airbus A320 aircraft successfully landed at RPVP Puerto Princesa International Airport, achieving an overall score of 84.3%. The final approach to runway 09 was initiated from the west, with a heading of 88.0° at 1 nautical mile and 519 feet above ground level (agl). The aircraft successfully touched down on the runway, with a touchdown speed of 122 knots, which was within the acceptable range.
However, there were some areas for improvement during the landing. The threshold height at 65 feet agl was above the target, indicating that the aircraft may have been slightly high during the approach. Additionally, the runway touchdown position was misaligned by 9.5 meters from the centerline, which could have been due to a slight deviation in the aircraft's alignment during the approach.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were favorable, with a temperature of 28°C and a wind speed of 10 knots at 90°. The crosswind component was negligible, but the headwind component was 10 knots, which could have affected the aircraft's approach and landing performance. Despite these conditions, the aircraft's touchdown speed and rate were within acceptable limits, with a touchdown speed of 122 knots and a touchdown rate of -248 feet per minute (fpm).
The total landing distance was 1,789 meters, which was 69% of the runway length. This indicates that the aircraft was able to stop within a reasonable distance after touchdown. However, the runway rollout alignment was slightly misaligned by 9.4 meters from the centerline, which could have been due to a slight deviation in the aircraft's alignment during the rollout.
Overall, the landing was successful, but there were some areas for improvement, particularly in terms of alignment and threshold height. With some adjustments to the approach and landing technique, the aircraft's performance could be further improved.
