Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
Two stabilised approach gates, each with seven checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,587 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,587 m of the 3,123 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 373 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 5 minutes and covered a distance of 1 nautical mile. The aircraft, a Boeing 777-300, then departed from runway 36L at Adolfo Suárez Madrid–Barajas Airport (LEMD). The takeoff distance was 1,114 meters, which was 33% of the runway length. The liftoff speed was 158 knots, and the local weather conditions at the time of departure were a temperature of 16°C, with a wind speed of 2 knots at 0°.
As the aircraft climbed, it started its enroute climb 2 miles northwest of Paracuellos de Jarama, Spain. The climb took 11 minutes and covered a distance of 74 nautical miles, during which the aircraft ascended from 2,940 feet above sea level to 32,997 feet above sea level, an increase of 30,057 feet. The enroute level cruise then started 1 mile northwest of Navalmoral, Spain, and lasted for 16 minutes, covering a distance of 121 nautical miles.
The enroute descent began 6 miles north of Alburquerque, Spain, and took 25 minutes to descend from 32,996 feet above sea level to 1,642 feet above sea level, a decrease of 31,354 feet. The descent covered a distance of 132 nautical miles. The final approach to runway 02 at Lisbon Portela Airport (LPPT) was made from the south, heading 23.0° at 4 nautical miles and 1,286 feet above ground level.
The landing on runway 02 was successful, with a touchdown distance of 373 meters, which was good. However, the touchdown speed of 145 knots was a little fast, and the touchdown rate of -236 feet per minute was fair. The runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 4.0 meters from the centerline. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were a temperature of 13°C, with a wind speed of 4 knots at 320°.
The total landing distance was 1,507 meters, which was 48% of the runway length. The runway rollout alignment was very good. After landing, the aircraft taxiied to the parking from the runway, which took 3 minutes and covered a distance of less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 335 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 62 minutes. The aircraft used 7,744 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The Boeing 777-300 aircraft successfully landed at LPPT Humberto Delgado Airport (Lisbon Portela Airport) with a score of 99.6%. The final approach to runway 02 was initiated from the south, with a heading of 23.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,286 feet above ground level (agl). The aircraft maintained a good threshold height, and the threshold speed was also satisfactory at 147 knots.
Upon touchdown, the aircraft's performance was generally good, with a touchdown distance of 373 meters. However, the touchdown speed of 145 knots was slightly faster than ideal, and the touchdown rate of -236 feet per minute (fpm) was only fair. The runway touchdown position was also slightly misaligned by 4.0 meters from the centerline.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were relatively calm, with a temperature of 13°C and a wind speed of 4 knots at 320°. The crosswind component was 4 knots, while the headwind component was 2 knots. Despite these conditions, the aircraft's landing performance was satisfactory, with a total landing distance of 1,507 meters, which accounted for 48% of the runway length.
One notable aspect of the landing was the runway rollout alignment, which was very good. This indicates that the aircraft's brakes were applied smoothly and effectively, allowing the aircraft to come to a stop in a straight line. Overall, the landing was successful, and the aircraft's performance was satisfactory, despite a few minor issues with touchdown speed and alignment.
