Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 2,533 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 2,533 m of the 3,347 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 1,481 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a departure roll from runway 24 at Edinburgh Airport, with the Boeing 737-800 aircraft taking off after a distance of 679 meters, which is 32% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 148 knots. At the time of departure, the local weather conditions were characterized by a temperature of 10 degrees Celsius and a wind speed of 15 knots from a direction of 240 degrees, resulting in a headwind of 15 knots.
As the aircraft climbed, it started its enroute climb overhead Ratho Station, a location in the City of Edinburgh, Scotland. The climb from 1,107 feet above sea level to 5,877 feet above sea level was achieved in just 3 minutes, covering a distance of 13 nautical miles and an increase of 4,770 feet. Following this initial climb, the aircraft entered a level cruise phase, which started overhead Blackridge in West Lothian, Scotland, and lasted for 2 minutes, covering a distance of 9 nautical miles.
The aircraft then began another climb phase, this time from 5,874 feet above sea level to 36,662 feet above sea level, an increase of 30,787 feet, which was achieved in 14 minutes and covered a distance of 85 nautical miles. The climb phase started overhead Bargeddie in North Lanarkshire, Scotland. After this climb, the aircraft entered another level cruise phase, which lasted for 120 minutes and covered a distance of 880 nautical miles. This cruise phase started 5 miles north-east of Gosforth in Cumbria, England.
As the aircraft approached its destination, it began its descent phase, which started 3 miles south of La Puebla de Montalban in Castilla-La Mancha, Spain. The descent from 36,944 feet above sea level to 1,361 feet above sea level was achieved in 31 minutes, covering a distance of 162 nautical miles and a decrease of 35,583 feet.
The final approach to runway 09 at Sevilla Airport was made from the west, with the aircraft heading 90 degrees at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,253 feet above ground level. The landing on runway 09 was successful, with the touchdown point being 1,010 meters beyond the touchdown zone. The touchdown speed was 110 knots, which was good, while the touchdown rate was fair at -245 feet per minute. The runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 3.7 meters from the centerline.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 7 degrees Celsius and a wind speed of 0 knots from a direction of 94 degrees, resulting in no crosswind or headwind. The total landing distance was 2,398 meters, which is 72% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was very good.
In total, the flight covered a distance of 1,157 nautical miles and took 174 minutes to complete, using 5,860 kilograms of fuel.
The Boeing 737-800 aircraft successfully landed at LEZL Sevilla Airport, with a final approach score of 82.6%. The aircraft was approaching the runway from the west, heading 90.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,253 feet above ground level (agl). The landing was executed on runway 09, which has a length of 3,347 meters.
The threshold height at 94 feet agl was significantly above the target, indicating that the aircraft may have been higher than desired at the point of touchdown. However, the threshold speed was good at 142 knots, suggesting that the aircraft was properly configured for landing. The touchdown point was 1,010 meters beyond the touchdown zone, which may indicate a slightly longer than ideal landing roll.
The touchdown speed of 110 knots was good, indicating that the aircraft was properly slowed down before touching down on the runway. However, the touchdown rate of -245 feet per minute (fpm) was only fair, suggesting that the aircraft may have experienced a slightly higher than ideal rate of descent during the final stages of the landing.
The runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 3.7 meters from the centerline, which may have been due to a slight deviation in the aircraft's approach path. The local weather conditions at the time of the landing were calm, with a temperature of 7°C and no wind.
The total landing distance of 2,398 meters was 72% of the runway length, which is a relatively short landing roll. The runway rollout alignment was very good, indicating that the aircraft was properly aligned with the runway centerline during the rollout phase of the landing. Overall, the landing was successful, but there were some minor deviations from the ideal landing parameters.
