Maintain the centreline
A small uncorrected heading error at 40 knots becomes a metre of offset per second by 100 knots, noticed only at rotation, producing a crabbed liftoff. Root cause is nearly always eyes on the tape instead of the far end of the runway. Small heading changes displace a distant point visibly long before the nearby centreline stripes look wrong.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 4,991 ft of the approach.
Plan view — the full 4,991 ft runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 1,219 ft touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a quick taxiing period from the parking area to the runway, taking less than 1 minute and covering a distance of less than 1 nautical mile. The aircraft, a DA42-VI, then departed from runway 34R at KPAE Seattle Paine Field International Airport. The takeoff distance was 1,436 feet, which accounted for 48% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 73 knots, and the local weather conditions were characterized by a temperature of 40°F and a wind speed of 0 knots at 239 degrees.
As the aircraft climbed away from the airport, it began its enroute climb, which started overhead KPAE Seattle Paine Field International Airport. The climb took the aircraft from an altitude of 969 feet above sea level to 3,524 feet above sea level, an increase of 2,556 feet, in just 3 minutes and covering a distance of 4 nautical miles. The enroute level cruise then began 1 mile southwest of Picnic Point, lasting for 27 minutes and covering a distance of 74 nautical miles.
The enroute descent started overhead Aberdeen Gardens, where the aircraft descended from 2,889 feet above sea level to 1,684 feet above sea level, a decrease of 1,205 feet, in just 2 minutes and covering a distance of 5 nautical miles. The enroute level cruise then began again 2 miles northeast of Hoquiam, lasting for 3 minutes and covering a distance of 4 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 06 at KHQM Bowerman Airport was made from the west, with a heading of 80.0 degrees at an altitude of 286 feet above ground level. The landing was made on the runway, which had a length of 4,991 feet. The threshold height was slightly above the target, but the threshold speed was well above the target at 80 knots. The touchdown distance was good at 1,214 feet, and the touchdown speed was 65 knots, which was also good. The touchdown rate was excellent at -54 feet per minute.
The runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 11 feet from the centerline, but the runway rollout alignment was very good. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 36°F and a wind speed of 4 knots at 90 degrees. The crosswind was 1 knot, and the headwind was 4 knots.
The total landing distance was 2,271 feet, which accounted for 46% of the runway. The taxiing period from the runway to the parking area took 2 minutes and covered a distance of less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 89 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 51 minutes. The aircraft used 64 pounds of fuel during the flight.
The DA42-VI aircraft successfully landed at KHQM Bowerman Airport, demonstrating a high level of proficiency in its pilot. The final approach was initiated from the west, heading 80.0° at 0 nm and 286 ft above ground level (agl), with the aircraft ultimately touching down on runway 06.
The landing performance was impressive, with a touchdown speed of 65 kn, which is well within the acceptable range. The touchdown distance of 1,214 ft was also good, indicating that the pilot had a solid understanding of the aircraft's performance characteristics and was able to bring it in smoothly. The touchdown rate of -54 fpm was particularly noteworthy, as it suggests that the pilot was able to maintain a high degree of control and precision during the landing.
However, there were a few minor issues with the landing. The threshold height at 56 ft agl was slightly above the target, indicating that the pilot may have been slightly high on the approach. Additionally, the threshold speed was well above the target at 80 kn, suggesting that the pilot may have been a bit too aggressive on the approach. The runway touchdown position was also slightly misaligned by 11 ft from the centreline, which may have been due to a slight deviation in the pilot's alignment or a minor issue with the aircraft's navigation system.
Despite these minor issues, the overall landing performance was excellent, with a total landing distance of 2,271 ft, which is only 46% of the runway length. This indicates that the pilot was able to bring the aircraft in quickly and efficiently, with a high degree of control and precision. The runway rollout alignment was also very good, suggesting that the pilot was able to maintain a high level of control and stability during the rollout phase.
The local weather conditions at the time of the landing were relatively calm, with a temperature of 36 °F and a wind speed of 4 kn at 90°. The crosswind component was minimal at 1 kn, while the headwind component was 4 kn, which may have contributed to the slightly high threshold speed. Overall, the landing performance was impressive, and the pilot demonstrated a high level of proficiency and skill in bringing the DA42-VI aircraft safely to the ground.
