Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 2,190 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 267 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking area to the runway, which took 4 minutes and covered a distance of 1 nautical mile. The aircraft, a Boeing 737-700, then departed from runway 27 at East Midlands Airport (EGNX), with a takeoff distance of 985 meters, which was 38% of the runway length. The liftoff speed was 148 knots.
As the aircraft took off, it encountered local weather conditions with a temperature of 13 degrees Celsius and a wind speed of 3 knots at 209 degrees. The crosswind was 3 knots, and the headwind was 2 knots. After departing from East Midlands Airport, the aircraft began its enroute climb, which started overhead Castle Donington in Leicestershire, England. The climb took 34 minutes and covered a distance of 228 nautical miles, with the aircraft ascending from 1,339 feet above sea level to 37,336 feet above sea level, an increase of 35,997 feet.
The enroute level cruise started 3 miles west of Rathdowney in Leinster, Ireland, and lasted for 401 minutes, covering a distance of 2,792 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its enroute descent, which started overhead Chesterbrook in Pennsylvania, United States. The descent took 9 minutes and covered a distance of 99 nautical miles, with the aircraft descending from 38,057 feet above sea level to 2,003 feet above sea level, a decrease of 36,053 feet.
The enroute level cruise started again 1 mile south of Seat Pleasant in Maryland, United States, and lasted for 7 minutes, covering a distance of 8 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its final approach to runway 01 at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (KDCA), approaching from the south at a heading of 355.0 degrees and 4 nautical miles from the runway. The aircraft landed on runway 01, which had a length of 2,190 meters, with a good threshold height. The threshold speed was good at 117 knots, and the touchdown distance was good at 265 meters.
The touchdown speed was 112 knots, and the touchdown rate was smooth at -138 feet per minute. The runway touchdown alignment was perfect, and the runway rollout alignment was also perfect. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were a temperature of 20 degrees Celsius. The total landing distance was 670 meters, which was 31% of the runway length. The taxiing period from the runway to the parking area took less than 1 minute and covered a distance of less than 1 nautical mile.
The total flight distance was 3,134 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 454 minutes. The aircraft used 17,830 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The Boeing 737-700 aircraft successfully landed at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (KDCA) on runway 01, achieving a score of 99.9%. The final approach was conducted from the south, heading 355.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,253 feet above ground level (agl).
The aircraft's approach and landing performance were impressive, with a good threshold height and speed of 117 knots. The touchdown distance of 265 meters was also within acceptable limits, and the touchdown speed of 112 knots was smooth and controlled. The touchdown rate of -138 feet per minute (fpm) was also satisfactory, indicating a gentle and controlled descent.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were favorable, with a temperature of 20°C. The runway length of 2,190 meters was sufficient for the aircraft to land safely, and the touchdown was made at the correct position on the runway.
The total landing distance of 670 meters was only 31% of the runway length, indicating a short and controlled landing. The runway rollout alignment was also perfect, with the aircraft maintaining its alignment with the runway centerline throughout the rollout phase. Overall, the landing was a textbook example of a safe and controlled approach and landing.
