Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

Two stabilised approach gates, each with six checks at 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway. They are the approach's score: the checks passed out of the checks that ran.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,715 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,715 m of the 2,749 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 965 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The Boeing 777-200ER taxied from the parking area to runway 27 at KSAN San Diego International Airport in 7 minutes, covering 2 nm.
During the departure roll on runway 27, the aircraft accelerated over a distance of 1,219 m (53 % of the runway) and lifted off at 170 kt; local weather was 25 °C with a wind of 4 kt from 309°, a 1 kt cross-wind and a 3 kt head-wind.
Climb commenced 1 mile west of KSAN, where the airplane rose from 993 ft asl to 34,778 ft asl, an increase of 33,785 ft in 27 minutes while covering 198 nm.
Level cruise began 14 miles south of 41CL Conner Goffs and continued for 212 minutes, during which 1,890 nm were flown.
A second climb started 6 miles north of CYTI Selby-Howard's Airstrip, raising the aircraft from 35,284 ft asl to 36,985 ft asl, a gain of 1,701 ft in 3 minutes over 30 nm.
The next cruise segment originated 2 miles north of CRL2 Westport / Rideau Lakes Airport and lasted 250 minutes, covering 2,352 nm.
A third climb was initiated at latitude 54.0219788, longitude -16.5272321, taking the airplane from 36,997 ft asl to 38,987 ft asl, an increase of 1,990 ft in 3 minutes across 30 nm.
Subsequent level cruise began at latitude 54.0115569, longitude -15.6395904 and persisted for 176 minutes, during which 1,498 nm were traversed.
Descent started 7 miles east of Zaton Doli, dropping from 39,006 ft asl to 10,007 ft asl, a loss of 28,998 ft in 17 minutes while covering 113 nm.
A brief cruise segment followed 5 miles north-west of Vore, lasting 2 minutes and spanning 6 nm.
The next descent began overhead Shijak, descending from 9,212 ft asl to 1,622 ft asl, a reduction of 7,590 ft in 9 minutes over 26 nm.
Final approach to runway 35 at LATI Tirana International Airport Mother Teresa reduced altitude from 1,556 ft agl to 77 ft agl in 102 seconds, with the aircraft scoring on the stabilisation gates.
Landing on runway 35 was executed with a threshold speed of 135 kt; the touchdown point was 565 m beyond the touchdown zone, the touchdown speed remained 135 kt, and the vertical speed was minus 165 fpm. Local conditions were 18 °C with a wind of 2 kt from 150°, a 1 kt cross-wind and a 2 kt tail-wind. The total landing distance was 1,650 m (60 % of the runway).
Runway rollout alignment was perfect as the aircraft decelerated to a stop.
The airplane taxied from the runway to the parking area in 1 minute, covering less than 1 nm.
In total, the flight covered 6,149 nm, required 708 minutes of airborne time, and consumed 83,669 kg of fuel.
The approach to runway 35 at LATI Tirana International Airport Mother Teresa was assessed as stabilised at the 1,000 ft gate, with gear, flaps, sink rate, glideslope, centreline and speed all within limits. The aircraft descended from 1,556 ft agl to 77 ft agl in 102 seconds, meeting the stabilisation gates and maintaining the required parameters throughout the final approach.
During the threshold and flare phase the aircraft exhibited a good threshold height and a threshold speed of 135 kt, which was recorded as good. The local weather was 18 °C with wind 2 kt from 150°, a 1 kt crosswind and a 2 kt tailwind.
Touchdown occurred 565 m beyond the touchdown zone on runway 35, with a touchdown speed of 135 kt described as a little fast. The vertical rate at touchdown was good at minus 165 fpm and runway-touchdown alignment was perfect.
Rollout covered a total landing distance of 1,650 m, representing 60 % of the 2,749 m runway, and runway rollout alignment remained perfect.
The landing scored 95.3 % and was overall strong; refining the touchdown point to be nearer the 300 m aim point and moderating speed slightly below the recorded 135 kt will further tighten performance.
