Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 2,494 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 962 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with the aircraft, an Airbus A320, taxiing from the parking area to the runway at RJCC New Chitose Airport. This process took approximately 4 minutes and covered a distance of less than 1 nautical mile. The departure roll took place on runway 19R, with the aircraft taking off after covering 23% of the runway's length. The takeoff distance was 676 meters, and the liftoff speed was 150 knots.
The local weather conditions at the time of departure were characterized by a temperature of 11 degrees Celsius and a wind speed of 16 knots from a direction of 250 degrees. This resulted in a crosswind of 15 knots and a headwind of 3 knots. The aircraft began its enroute climb approximately 1 mile south of RJCC New Chitose Airport, rising from an altitude of 1,064 feet above sea level to 33,152 feet above sea level. This climb, which covered a distance of 88 nautical miles, took 17 minutes to complete.
Following the initial climb, the aircraft entered a level cruise phase, which started 16 miles southwest of Kamiiso, Hokkaido, Japan. During this phase, the aircraft maintained a constant altitude of 33,152 feet above sea level for 49 minutes, covering a distance of 382 nautical miles.
As the aircraft approached its destination, it began its enroute descent, starting 3 miles northwest of Nagiso, Nagano-ken, Japan. The descent took 22 minutes to complete, during which the aircraft dropped from an altitude of 33,994 feet above sea level to 1,717 feet above sea level, covering a distance of 63 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 30 at RJNS Mount Fuji Shizuoka Airport was made from the east, with the aircraft heading 290.0 degrees at an altitude of 1,269 feet above ground level and a distance of 4 nautical miles from the runway. The landing took place on a runway with a length of 2,494 meters, and the threshold height was significantly above the target height. However, the threshold speed was good at 136 knots.
The touchdown point was 532 meters beyond the touchdown zone, with a touchdown speed of 125 knots and a touchdown rate of -29 feet per minute, which was perfect. The runway touchdown alignment was also perfect. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 17 degrees Celsius and a wind speed of 3 knots from a direction of 274 degrees, resulting in a crosswind of 1 knot and a headwind of 3 knots.
The total landing distance was 1,283 meters, which accounted for 51% of the runway's length. The runway rollout alignment was also perfect. The aircraft then taxied to the parking area, taking approximately 1 minute to cover a distance of less than 1 nautical mile.
In total, the flight covered a distance of 540 nautical miles, taking 95 minutes to complete, and used 3,505 kilograms of fuel.
The Airbus A320 successfully landed at Mount Fuji Shizuoka Airport, achieving an impressive score of 85.0%. The aircraft approached the runway from the east, heading 290.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,269 feet above ground level (agl). The final approach was executed with precision, setting the stage for a smooth touchdown.
Upon landing, the aircraft touched down on runway 30, which has a length of 2,494 meters. The threshold height at 83 feet agl was significantly above the target, indicating a slight deviation from the ideal landing configuration. However, the threshold speed was satisfactory at 136 knots, demonstrating the pilot's ability to manage the aircraft's speed effectively.
The touchdown point was located 532 meters beyond the touchdown zone, which is a relatively long distance. Nevertheless, the touchdown speed of 125 knots was within the acceptable range, and the touchdown rate of -29 feet per minute (fpm) was perfect, indicating a controlled descent. The runway touchdown alignment was also perfect, showcasing the pilot's skill in aligning the aircraft with the runway.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were favorable, with a temperature of 17°C and a gentle wind of 3 knots at 274°. The crosswind component was minimal at 1 knot, while the headwind component was 3 knots, providing a relatively stable environment for the landing.
The total landing distance of 1,283 meters was 51% of the runway length, which is a reasonable distance considering the aircraft's size and weight. The runway rollout alignment was perfect, indicating that the pilot maintained control of the aircraft during the rollout phase, ensuring a safe and stable taxiing process.
Overall, the Airbus A320's landing at Mount Fuji Shizuoka Airport was a success, with the pilot demonstrating a high level of skill and proficiency in executing a precise and controlled landing.
