Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 2,847 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 2,847 m of the 3,273 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 1,316 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a 20-minute taxiing period from the parking area to the runway, covering a distance of 5 nautical miles. The aircraft, a Boeing 777-300, departed from runway 30R at Dubai International Airport (OMDB), with a takeoff distance of 3,162 meters, which was 88% of the runway length. The liftoff speed was 201 knots, and the local weather conditions were characterized by a temperature of 30°C, with a wind speed of 4 knots at 99°.
As the aircraft climbed out of Dubai, it began its enroute climb, starting 2 miles northwest of the airport and reaching an altitude of 33,807 feet above sea level (asl) in 20 minutes, covering a distance of 139 nautical miles. The climb was from an initial altitude of 1,049 feet asl, resulting in an increase of 32,758 feet.
The enroute level cruise phase began 5 miles northeast of the Gulf of Oman, where the aircraft was moving in the vicinity of the carrier CVN78. This phase lasted for 148 minutes, covering a distance of 1,420 nautical miles. The aircraft then began another enroute climb, this time from 35,001 feet asl to 36,297 feet asl, an increase of 1,297 feet in just 2 minutes, covering a distance of 19 nautical miles.
The second enroute level cruise phase started 47 miles southeast of Nellore, India, and lasted for 183 minutes, covering a distance of 1,484 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its enroute descent, starting 3 miles south of Muar, Malaysia, and descending from 36,457 feet asl to 1,320 feet asl in 23 minutes, covering a distance of 94 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 02L at Singapore Changi Airport (WSSS) was made from the south, with a heading of 23.0° at 4 nautical miles and 1,295 feet above ground level (agl). The landing was made on runway 02L, which had a length of 3,273 meters. The threshold height was significantly above the target, but the threshold speed was good at 151 knots.
The touchdown point was 889 meters beyond the touchdown zone, with a touchdown speed of 147 knots, which was a little fast. The touchdown rate was fair at -242 feet per minute (fpm), and the runway touchdown alignment was very good. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 27°C, with a wind speed of 9 knots at 360°.
The total landing distance was 2,755 meters, which was 84% of the runway length. The runway rollout alignment was also very good. The taxiing period from the runway to the parking area took just 5 minutes, covering a distance of less than 1 nautical mile.
The total flight distance was 3,169 nautical miles, with a total flight time of 400 minutes. The aircraft used a significant amount of fuel, with a total of 53,959 kilograms consumed during the flight.
The Boeing 777-300 aircraft successfully landed at Singapore Changi Airport's runway 02L, achieving a score of 79.1%. The final approach was initiated from the south, heading 23.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,295 feet above ground level (agl). The aircraft's approach to the runway was executed with a good threshold speed of 151 knots, which is within the acceptable range.
However, there were some areas for improvement during the landing. The threshold height at 88 feet agl was significantly above the target, indicating that the aircraft may have been slightly high on its approach. Additionally, the touchdown speed of 147 knots was a little fast, which could have resulted in a higher touchdown rate. The touchdown rate of -242 feet per minute (fpm) was fair, but not ideal.
Despite these minor issues, the aircraft's runway touchdown alignment was very good, indicating that the pilot maintained a stable and controlled approach. The local weather conditions were favorable, with a temperature of 27°C and a gentle headwind of 8 knots at 360°. The crosswind was minimal at 3 knots, which made the landing even smoother.
The total landing distance of 2,755 meters was 84% of the runway length, which is a relatively short distance considering the aircraft's size and weight. The runway rollout alignment was also very good, indicating that the pilot maintained control of the aircraft during the rollout phase. Overall, the landing was successful, but there is room for improvement in terms of achieving a more precise approach and touchdown.
