Improve the pattern base leg turn
Bank angle in the pattern is conventionally kept to 20 to 30 degrees, and the base-to-final turn is where that convention earns its keep. Stall speed rises with bank because the wing must produce more lift in a turn. Roughly 7 per cent higher at 30 degrees, about 19 per cent at 45, and around 40 per cent at 60. At 65 kt on base you don't have much margin to spend steepening a turn to salvage an overshoot.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate for a circuit: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate is an instrument-approach check and does not apply. These checks are the approach's score.
At the 500 ft gate: off the runway's 3° glideslope.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 1,866 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 480 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The 0.26 G arrival is the firm side of smooth.
The rest of the report
The Lancair Legacy taxied to runway 23 at EGPE Inverness Airport and commenced the departure roll, accelerating through a take-off distance of 651 m which represented 35 % of the available runway. Liftoff was achieved at 113 kt. Ambient conditions recorded a temperature of 17 °C, wind from 270° at 2 kt, with a cross-wind component of 1 kt and a head-wind component of 2 kt.
A left-hand pattern entry was executed for runway 23, covering a distance of less than 1 nm in 21 seconds.
Subsequently, the aircraft performed a left-hand pattern cross-wind leg, again less than 1 nm, completed in 8 seconds.
The downwind turn was flown for a distance of 2 nm, establishing an angle to the runway of 59.3° measured from the 45° reference.
During the downwind leg the aircraft proceeded 2 nm in 43 seconds before initiating the base turn.
The base-leg turn covered 1 nm and aligned the aircraft to an angle of 15.5° relative to the runway centreline.
On final approach to runway 23 the aircraft descended from 582 ft AGL to 202 ft AGL within 39 seconds, meeting the stabilisation gate criteria.
Touchdown occurred on runway 23, whose total length is 1,866 m. The threshold speed was recorded at 103 kt, and the aircraft contacted the surface 49 m beyond the designated touchdown zone at a speed of 87 kt. The vertical speed at touchdown was minus 52 fpm and the alignment was very good. The total landing distance measured 819 m, representing 44 % of the runway. Weather at the time of landing was 20 °C, wind from 221° at 3 kt, with no cross-wind and a head-wind component of 3 kt.
Runway rollout alignment was assessed as very good as the aircraft decelerated and exited the runway.
In total the flight covered 9 nm, required 11 minutes of elapsed time, and consumed 9 kg of fuel.
The Lancair Legacy approached runway 23 at EGPE Inverness Airport and was scored on the stabilisation gates during the final approach. Descent was from 582 ft AGL to 202 ft AGL over 39 seconds, and the approach was conducted with the indicated stabilisation assessment.
During the threshold and flare phase the aircraft maintained a good threshold height and a threshold speed of 103 kt, which was described as good. The descent profile from 582 ft to 202 ft AGL in 39 seconds provided the required height and speed for a proper flare.
Touchdown occurred 49 m beyond the touchdown zone with a touchdown speed of 87 kt, noted as good, and a touchdown rate of minus 52 fpm, described as excellent. Runway touchdown alignment was very good.
The rollout covered a total landing distance of 819 m, representing 44 % of the 1 866 m runway, and rollout alignment was very good.
To refine an already high-scoring landing, aim to achieve touchdown nearer the designated touchdown zone to reduce the 49 m overshoot, while preserving the current speed and alignment that produced the excellent rate and alignment. Maintaining the present approach and flare techniques will support consistent performance.
