Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
Two stabilised approach gates, each with seven checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 5,000 ft of the approach.
Plan view — the first 5,000 ft of the 10,560 ft runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 1,034 ft touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 8 minutes and covered a distance of 2 nautical miles. The aircraft, a Boeing 737-800, then departed from runway 16R at KEUG Mahlon Sweet Field in Eugene, Oregon. The takeoff distance was 5,304 feet, which was 66% of the runway length. The liftoff speed was 156 knots.
As the aircraft climbed out of KEUG, it encountered local weather conditions of a temperature of 57°F and winds of 4 knots at 149°. The crosswind was 2 knots, and the headwind was 4 knots. The enroute climb started 1 mile south of the airport and continued for 18 minutes, covering a distance of 96 nautical miles. The aircraft climbed from an altitude of 1,359 feet above sea level to 20,517 feet, an increase of 19,158 feet.
After reaching the initial cruise altitude, the aircraft began a level cruise 12 miles northwest of Chiloquin State Airport in Oregon. This cruise lasted for 2 minutes and covered a distance of 11 nautical miles. The aircraft then began another climb 6 miles southwest of Chiloquin, increasing its altitude from 21,105 feet to 21,674 feet in 2 minutes, covering a distance of 11 nautical miles.
The aircraft continued its enroute climb, this time from 23,147 feet to 36,996 feet in 13 minutes, covering a distance of 100 nautical miles. The climb started 14 miles southeast of Newell, California. The aircraft then entered a level cruise 12 miles east of Amedee Army Air Field in California, lasting for 54 minutes and covering a distance of 426 nautical miles.
As the aircraft approached its destination, it began its descent 2 miles northwest of X Bar 1 Ranch Lower Airport in Arizona. The descent from 36,412 feet to 2,433 feet took 29 minutes, covering a distance of 160 nautical miles. The final approach to runway 08 at KPHX Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport was made from the west, with a heading of 90.0° and an altitude of 1,294 feet above ground level.
The landing on runway 08 was successful, with a touchdown distance of 1,038 feet and a touchdown speed of 140 knots, which was slightly fast. The touchdown rate was good at -155 feet per minute, and the runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 10 feet from the centerline. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were a temperature of 57°F and winds of 2 knots at 110°.
The total landing distance was 4,411 feet, which was 42% of the runway length. The runway rollout alignment was perfect. The taxiing period from the runway to the parking took 4 minutes and covered a distance of less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 861 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 137 minutes. The aircraft used 12,185 pounds of fuel during the flight.
The Boeing 737-800 aircraft successfully landed at KPHX Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, achieving a high score of 99.6%. The final approach to runway 08 was conducted from the west, with a heading of 90.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,294 feet above ground level (agl).
The aircraft touched down on the runway with a good threshold height, indicating a smooth and controlled descent. The threshold speed of 145 knots was also within the acceptable range, demonstrating the pilot's ability to manage the aircraft's speed during the landing phase. The touchdown distance of 1,038 feet was also satisfactory, indicating that the aircraft was able to maintain a stable and controlled approach.
However, the touchdown speed of 140 knots was slightly faster than the recommended speed, which may have resulted in a slightly higher touchdown rate. Fortunately, the actual touchdown rate of -155 feet per minute (fpm) was still within the acceptable range, indicating that the aircraft was able to absorb the impact of touchdown without any issues.
The runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 10 feet from the centerline, which may have been due to a slight deviation in the pilot's alignment during the final approach. However, this deviation did not have any significant impact on the overall landing performance.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were favorable, with a temperature of 57°F and a wind speed of 2 knots at 110°. The crosswind component was minimal at 1 knot, while the headwind component was 2 knots, which helped to stabilize the aircraft during the landing phase.
The total landing distance of 4,411 feet was 42% of the runway length, which is a relatively short distance considering the aircraft's size and weight. The runway rollout alignment was perfect, indicating that the pilot was able to maintain control of the aircraft during the rollout phase and bring it to a safe stop.
Overall, the landing performance of the Boeing 737-800 aircraft at KPHX Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport was satisfactory, with a high score of 99.6%. The pilot demonstrated good control and management of the aircraft during the final approach and landing phase, resulting in a smooth and controlled touchdown.
