MY FS FLIGHTS
Flight Score
Keep the approach speed on target
Every knot above Vref is stored kinetic energy, and energy stored at the threshold must be dissipated in ground effect before the aeroplane will stop flying. Because kinetic energy scales with the square of speed, the excess you must dissipate grows fast. At a 45-knot approach, five knots hot is over a tenth more speed and roughly a quarter more energy to get rid of in ground effect. This is why the fix is never in the flare. It was decided three miles earlier, on final, at the airspeed indicator.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 5,000 ft of the approach.
Plan view — the first 5,000 ft of the 5,997 ft runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 1,239 ft touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The F-35C Lightning took off from runway 21 at KSMO Santa Monica Municipal Airport, covering a takeoff distance of 2,323 feet, which is 47% of the runway. The aircraft lifted off at a speed of 200 knots. The local weather conditions at the time of departure were characterized by a temperature of 61°F and a wind speed of 3 knots from a direction of 270°, resulting in a 2-knot headwind and a negligible crosswind.
As the aircraft climbed out of KSMO, it began its enroute climb overhead Venice, California, where it ascended from an altitude of 1,060 feet above sea level to 1,203 feet in less than 1 minute, covering a distance of less than 1 nautical mile. The aircraft then began its enroute descent from 1,233 feet to 567 feet in 2 minutes, covering 7 nautical miles.
The F-35C continued its flight, initiating another enroute climb 1 mile southeast of Topanga, California, where it ascended from 610 feet to 4,628 feet in 3 minutes, covering 16 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its final enroute descent 1 mile northwest of Simi Valley, California, where it descended from 4,585 feet to 178 feet in 3 minutes, covering 15 nautical miles.
The F-35C then began its final approach to runway 26 at KCMA Camarillo International Airport, approaching from the east at a heading of 271.0° and an altitude of 106 feet above ground level. The aircraft landed on the runway, which is 5,997 feet long, with a touchdown distance of 1,252 feet, which is 43% of the runway. The touchdown speed was 149 knots, and the touchdown rate was smooth at -112 feet per minute.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 59°F and a wind speed of 5 knots from a direction of 269°, resulting in a 5-knot headwind and no crosswind. The runway threshold height was above the target, and the threshold speed was excessively high at 515 knots. However, the runway touchdown alignment was perfect, and the runway rollout alignment was also perfect.
After landing, the F-35C taxied to the parking area from the runway in less than 1 minute, covering a distance of less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 40 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 11 minutes. The aircraft used -15 pounds of fuel during the flight.
The F-35C Lightning aircraft successfully landed on runway 26 at KCMA Camarillo International Airport, achieving a score of 76.9%. The final approach was initiated from the east, heading 271.0° at an altitude of 106 feet above ground level (agl) and 0 nautical miles from the runway.
Upon landing, the aircraft touched down at a speed of 149 knots, which was considered good. The touchdown distance of 1,252 feet was also satisfactory, indicating a smooth and controlled descent. The touchdown rate of -112 feet per minute (fpm) was smooth, further emphasizing the pilot's skill in executing a gentle touchdown.
However, there were some areas for improvement. The threshold height at 67 feet agl was above the target, suggesting that the aircraft may have been slightly high on final approach. Additionally, the threshold speed of 515 knots was excessively high, indicating that the pilot may have been pushing the aircraft too hard on final approach.
Despite these minor issues, the overall performance of the F-35C Lightning was impressive. The runway touchdown alignment was perfect, and the runway rollout alignment was also spot on. The local weather conditions, with a temperature of 59°F and a 5-knot headwind, did not seem to have a significant impact on the landing.
The total landing distance of 2,556 feet was 43% of the runway length, which is a relatively short distance considering the aircraft's size and weight. Overall, the F-35C Lightning demonstrated its capabilities as a high-performance aircraft, and the pilot's skills were evident in the smooth and controlled landing.
