MY FS FLIGHTS
Flight Score
Know your rotation speed
A typical trainer rotates in the mid-50s of knots - a 172 at around 55 KIAS, climbing out at a Vy in the low 70s, though check your own POH rather than memorising Cessna's numbers - and the transferable rule is that Vr sits just above the stall speed in takeoff configuration. Rotate early because "it felt ready" and the aircraft lifts off inside ground effect, where induced drag is reduced, then climbs out of it into more drag. On a marginal-performance day the result is an aircraft that lifts off and then refuses to climb, sagging back towards the runway.

One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 4,449 ft of the approach.
Plan view — the full 4,449 ft runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 73 ft touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
Departing runway 23L at KEDW Edwards Air Force Base, the DC Designs F4 Blue Angels took to the skies, utilizing a 5,496-foot takeoff distance, which represented 37% of the available runway. The aircraft lifted off at a speed of 210 knots, with a local temperature of 89°F and a headwind of 17 knots. As the aircraft climbed away from the base, it began its enroute climb 1 mile southwest of Edwards, ascending from 2,747 feet above sea level to 15,045 feet, a vertical gain of 12,297 feet in just 1 minute.
Throughout the flight, the aircraft engaged in a series of climbs and descents, navigating through various points in the California landscape. Notably, the enroute descent from 14,932 feet to 13,837 feet, a decrease of 1,095 feet in 2 minutes, covered 13 nautical miles. The aircraft also experienced a significant descent from 14,823 feet to 1,734 feet, a decrease of 13,089 feet in 3 minutes, covering 24 nautical miles. The flight eventually transitioned to a level cruise, lasting 2 minutes and covering 10 nautical miles, before resuming its climb and descent phases.
The final approach to runway 29R at KTOA Zamperini Field was executed from the southeast, with a heading of 309.0° at 1 nautical mile and 313 feet above ground level. The aircraft landed on the 3,912-foot runway, with a touchdown distance of 73 feet and a touchdown speed of 146 knots. The touchdown rate was notably hard at -506 feet per minute, but the runway touchdown alignment was very good. Following a successful landing, the aircraft taxied to the parking area, covering less than 1 nautical mile in 2 minutes. The total flight distance was 187 nautical miles, with a fuel consumption of -11 pounds.
The final approach to runway 29R at KTOA Zamperini Field from the south east was executed with precision, with the aircraft intercepting the localizer at 1 nm and 313 ft above ground level, heading 309.0°. The approach quality was satisfactory, with a good threshold height and a threshold speed of 147 kt, which was well below the target speed to avoid stalling. The aircraft touched down at a distance of 73 ft, with a touchdown speed of 146 kt, indicating a good touchdown characteristic.
The touchdown rate was, however, very hard at -506 fpm, which may require further attention to ensure a smoother touchdown. The runway touchdown alignment was very good, with the aircraft centered on the runway. The local weather conditions, with a temperature of 68 °F and a 7 kt headwind, contributed to a relatively smooth landing. The crosswind component was minimal at 2 kt, which further facilitated a stable approach.
The total landing distance of 1,508 ft was 39% of the runway length, indicating a satisfactory rollout performance. The runway rollout alignment was also very good, with the aircraft maintaining its centerline alignment throughout the rollout phase. Overall, the landing performance was satisfactory, with a score of 94.6%.
