Maintain the centreline
A small uncorrected heading error at 40 knots becomes a metre of offset per second by 100 knots, noticed only at rotation, producing a crabbed liftoff. Root cause is nearly always eyes on the tape instead of the far end of the runway. Small heading changes displace a distant point visibly long before the nearby centreline stripes look wrong.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 2,017 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 223 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with the aircraft, a CRJ900, taxiing from the parking area to the runway at Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport, taking 6 minutes and covering a distance of 2 nautical miles. The departure roll took place on runway 21R, with the aircraft lifting off at a speed of 156 knots after covering 54% of the runway's length.
As the aircraft took to the skies, it encountered local weather conditions of 18°C temperature and a wind speed of 11 knots from a direction of 200°. The crosswind was minimal at 2 knots, while the headwind was 11 knots. The enroute climb started over the airport, with the aircraft ascending from 1,668 feet above sea level to 33,263 feet, an increase of 31,595 feet in 17 minutes, covering a distance of 85 nautical miles.
The enroute level cruise began over Spencer, Ohio, and lasted for 33 minutes, during which the aircraft covered a distance of 225 nautical miles. The aircraft then started its descent 5 miles west of Lexington Airport, Virginia, and descended from 34,167 feet to 11,122 feet, a decrease of 23,045 feet in 14 minutes, covering a distance of 69 nautical miles.
The aircraft then entered another level cruise, this time starting 3 miles south of Cumberland, Virginia, and lasting for 2 minutes, during which it covered a distance of 9 nautical miles. The enroute descent began 5 miles west of Carilion Westlake Center Heliport, Hardy, Virginia, and the aircraft descended from 11,104 feet to 1,082 feet, a decrease of 10,022 feet in 10 minutes, covering a distance of 35 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 20 at Richmond International Airport took place from the north, with the aircraft heading 196.0° at 4 nautical miles and 914 feet above ground level. The landing took place on the runway, which was 2,017 meters long, with a good threshold height. The threshold speed was slightly above target at 150 knots, and the touchdown distance was good at 226 meters.
However, the touchdown speed was fast at 161 knots, and the touchdown rate was very hard at -552 feet per minute. The runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 7.5 meters from the centerline. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were 18°C temperature and a wind speed of 9 knots from a direction of 219°, with a crosswind of 4 knots and a headwind of 8 knots.
The total landing distance was 1,018 meters, which was 50% of the runway's length. The runway rollout alignment was very good. The aircraft then taxied to the parking area, taking 3 minutes and covering a distance of less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 436 nautical miles, taking 102 minutes, and the aircraft used 2,803 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The CRJ900 aircraft successfully landed on runway 20 at KRIC Richmond International Airport, achieving an overall score of 87.5%. The final approach was initiated from the north, heading 196.0° at 4 nautical miles and 914 feet above ground level (agl). The aircraft's performance during the landing was evaluated based on several key parameters.
The landing was conducted on a runway with a length of 2,017 meters, and the threshold height was reported as good. However, the threshold speed was slightly above the target speed of 150 knots, registering at 163 kt. This indicates that the aircraft may have been slightly over-speeding during the approach. Despite this, the touchdown distance was satisfactory at 226 meters, indicating that the pilot maintained control and made a smooth touchdown.
However, the touchdown speed of 161 kt was reported as fast, suggesting that the pilot may have been unable to fully arrest the aircraft's descent before touchdown. Furthermore, the touchdown rate was very hard at -552 feet per minute (fpm), which could have put additional stress on the aircraft's landing gear and potentially compromised the safety of the passengers and crew.
In terms of runway alignment, the aircraft touched down slightly off-centerline, deviating by 7.5 meters from the centerline. This may have been due to the pilot's inability to fully compensate for the crosswind, which was reported as 4 kt. The local weather conditions, with a temperature of 18°C and a wind speed of 9 kt at 219°, may have also contributed to the slight deviation from the centerline.
The total landing distance of 1,018 meters was 50% of the runway length, which is within acceptable limits. The runway rollout alignment was reported as very good, indicating that the pilot was able to maintain control and smoothly transition from the landing phase to the rollout phase. Overall, while the landing was successful, there were some areas for improvement, particularly in terms of touchdown speed and touchdown rate.
