Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

Two stabilised approach gates, each with six checks at 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,592 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,592 m of the 2,745 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 575 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The Airbus A320 taxied from the parking area to runway 17R at KDFW Dallas Fort Worth International Airport, a movement that required 11 minutes and covered 2 nm.
During the departure roll on runway 17R the aircraft accelerated to a liftoff speed of 159 kt, using a takeoff distance of 1,836 m which represented 45 % of the runway length; ambient temperature was 40 °C with wind 8 kt from 200°, a 3 kt crosswind component and an 8 kt headwind.
Climb commenced 1 mile south of KDFW, with the airplane rising from 1,536 ft asl to 19,286 ft asl - an increase of 17,751 ft - over 8 minutes while covering 47 nm.
Level cruise began 1 mile north-east of KINJ Hillsboro Municipal Airport and continued for 7 minutes, during which the flight covered 54 nm.
Descent was initiated 4 miles east of Troy, Texas, with the aircraft descending from 19,811 ft asl to 1,781 ft asl - a loss of 18,029 ft - in 12 minutes and traversing 61 nm.
The final approach to runway 18L at KAUS Austin Bergstrom International Airport was flown from the north on a heading of 179.0°, intercepting the approach at 4 nm and 1,271 ft agl.
Landing on runway 18L, which is 2,745 m long, occurred with a threshold speed slightly above target at 142 kt; touchdown was 158 m beyond the touchdown zone at a speed of 132 kt, a vertical speed of minus 153 fpm, and perfect runway-centerline alignment. Local weather at the time was 36 °C with wind 13 kt from 169°, a 2 kt crosswind and a 13 kt headwind.
The rollout covered a total landing distance of 1,510 m, representing 55 % of the runway, and the aircraft maintained perfect alignment throughout the deceleration phase.
After exiting the runway the Airbus A320 taxied to the parking area, a taxi-in that lasted 12 minutes and spanned 2 nm.
In total the flight covered 172 nm, required 50 minutes of airborne time, and consumed 1,873 kg of fuel.
The Airbus A320 approached runway 18L at KAUS Austin Bergstrom International Airport from the north on a heading of 179.0° at 4 nm and 1,271 ft agl. The final approach was assessed as stabilised at the 1,000 ft gate, with gear, flaps, sink rate, glideslope and centreline all within limits, and the aircraft maintained the prescribed flight path in the reported temperature of 36 °C and wind 13 kt from 169° (crosswind 2 kt, headwind 13 kt).
During the threshold and flare phase the aircraft established a threshold speed slightly above target at 142 kt and reported a good threshold height, preparing for touchdown while maintaining the required glide path.
Touchdown occurred 158 m beyond the touchdown zone with a touchdown speed of 132 kt described as a little fast, a touchdown rate of -153 fpm judged good, and runway touchdown alignment perfect.
Rollout used a total landing distance of 1,510 m, representing 55 % of the 2,745 m runway, and runway rollout alignment was perfect.
With a final score of 98.6 % the landing was excellent; refining the approach to achieve the target threshold speed and reducing touchdown speed slightly will bring the touchdown point closer to the aim point and further optimise runway usage.
