Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (KDFW) is one of the world's busiest hubs, sited midway between Dallas and Fort Worth in North Texas and home to American Airlines' largest hub operation. For the simulator pilot it offers an imposing set of seven parallel and near-parallel hard-surfaced runways, full Class B controlled airspace and a comprehensive suite of approach, tower and ground frequencies, making it a benchmark exercise in heavy-jet airport operations.
Dallas Fort Worth International Airport lies in North Texas, roughly midway between the cities of Dallas and Fort Worth, and spreads across portions of Dallas and Tarrant counties, taking in parts of Grapevine, Irving, Euless and Coppell. It is operated by the DFW Airport Board on behalf of the cities of Dallas and Fort Worth, and serves as the largest hub for American Airlines, which is headquartered nearby. For a simulator pilot the field is notable less for any general-aviation charm than for its sheer scale: a nine-runway commercial complex handling one of the highest volumes of aircraft movements in the world, set within dense Class B airspace and surrounded by heavy jet traffic on virtually every approach and departure.
DFW sits beneath Class B controlled airspace, reflecting its status as one of the busiest airports in the world by aircraft movements. It is located approximately 16 miles northwest of Downtown Dallas and 20 miles northeast of Downtown Fort Worth, occupying land in both Dallas and Tarrant counties and covering portions of the cities of Grapevine, Irving, Euless and Coppell. Given the scale of the Class B airspace and the volume of airline traffic, any approach to the field is conducted under positive control with clearance required to enter the surrounding airspace.
The airfield comprises seven physical hard-surfaced runways, all lit. The longest pair, 18L/36R, measures 13,411 feet, with 18R/36L close behind at 13,410 feet; both are equipped with ILS. The central pair, 17C/35C, runs to 13,408 feet, also with ILS, while 17R/35L extends to 13,405 feet, likewise ILS-equipped. A shorter pair, 13R/31L, offers roughly 9,306 to 9,307 feet, with ILS on the 13R threshold. Runway 17L/35R measures 8,502 feet with ILS, and the final pair, 13L/31R, spans approximately 8,367 to 8,998 feet, with ILS on the 31R end. The combination of four runways exceeding 13,400 feet alongside three shorter parallels gives DFW one of the most extensive runway complexes in commercial aviation, well able to accommodate any aircraft type a simulator pilot might choose to fly.
DFW's radio callsign is Regional (RGNL), with approach control available on 28.465 MHz and 119.875 MHz, and departure control on 31.985 MHz and 118.55 MHz. Ground control operates on 121.65 MHz and tower on 124.15 MHz. Clearance delivery is provided on 128.25 MHz, with ATIS broadcast on 123.775 MHz. A UNICOM frequency of 122.95 MHz is also listed. The airport is fully equipped with ILS approaches serving all its major runways, reflecting its role as a primary hub for scheduled and cargo operations.
The airport lies between the cities of Dallas and Fort Worth and takes in parts of Grapevine, Irving, Euless and Coppell, which can serve as broad orientation points when approaching the area; Downtown Dallas lies about 16 miles to the southeast and Downtown Fort Worth about 20 miles to the southwest.
The site's aviation origins trace back to competing city airports: Dallas operated Love Field while Fort Worth operated Meacham Field. In 1940 the Civil Aeronautics Administration set aside funding for a joint Dallas/Fort Worth regional airport, and American Airlines and Braniff Airways struck a deal with the city of Arlington to build one, but the two cities could not agree and the project was abandoned in 1942. After the Second World War, Fort Worth annexed the site and developed it as Amon Carter Field with American Airlines' assistance, transferring commercial flights there from Meacham in 1953. In 1960 Fort Worth renamed it Greater Southwest International Airport in a bid to compete with Dallas, but traffic continued to favour Love Field. The joint airport proposal was revived in 1961 after the FAA declined to fund further investment in the separate fields, and in 1964 the federal government threatened to choose a site unilaterally if the cities could not agree. The two cities settled on a location just north of the near-abandoned Greater Southwest International, almost equidistant between the two downtowns. Land was purchased in 1966 and construction began in 1969, with the airport opening on 13 January 1974.
DFW is the largest hub for American Airlines, which is headquartered near the airport, and also serves as a hub for Ameriflight, Southern Airways Express and UPS Airlines, as well as an operating base for Frontier Airlines. It is among the busiest airports in the world by aircraft movements and by passenger traffic, with service to a large number of domestic and international destinations. The airport is also recognised as the largest carbon-neutral airport in the world and the first in North America to achieve that status. Given its scale and the volume of scheduled and cargo traffic it handles, operations at DFW are dominated by airline and freight movements within its Class B airspace.
