Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 2,449 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 2,449 m of the 2,933 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 1,180 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a departure roll from runway 31 at Birsa Munda Airport, VERC, where the aircraft, a CJ Simulations R-Fal M, took off after a distance of 699 meters, which accounted for 28% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 170 knots. The local weather conditions at the time of departure were characterized by a temperature of 32 degrees Celsius.
As the aircraft climbed out of Birsa Munda Airport, it began its enroute climb, which started overhead Ranchi, the capital city of the State of Jharkhand, India. The aircraft climbed from an altitude of 3,183 feet above sea level to 20,616 feet above sea level, an increase of 17,433 feet in just 6 minutes, covering a distance of 33 nautical miles. This marked the beginning of the aircraft's ascent to cruising altitude.
Following the enroute climb, the aircraft entered a level cruise phase, which started 12 miles southwest of Hazaribagh, another city in the State of Jharkhand, India. This phase of the flight lasted for 16 minutes, during which the aircraft covered a distance of 180 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its descent, which started 10 miles southeast of Raxaul, a city in the State of Bihar, India. The descent from 20,570 feet above sea level to 10,145 feet above sea level, a decrease of 10,426 feet in just 3 minutes, covered a distance of 20 nautical miles.
The aircraft then entered another level cruise phase, which started 9 miles east of VNSI Simara Airport, Simara, in the Province 2 of Nepal. This phase of the flight lasted for 3 minutes, during which the aircraft covered a distance of 8 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its descent once again, which started 12 miles southeast of Hetauda, a city in the Bagmati Province of Nepal. The descent from 10,194 feet above sea level to 9,346 feet above sea level, a decrease of 848 feet in just 2 minutes, covered a distance of 7 nautical miles.
The aircraft then entered another level cruise phase, which started 9 miles east of Hetauda, lasting for 2 minutes and covering 7 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its descent once again, which started 7 miles south of Kirtipur, a city in the Bagmati Province of Nepal. The descent from 8,982 feet above sea level to 4,457 feet above sea level, a decrease of 4,526 feet in 6 minutes, covered a distance of 11 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 20 at VNKT Tribhuvan International Airport, the destination airport, was made from the north, heading 203.0 degrees at 0 nautical miles and 98 feet above ground level. The landing on runway 20 was made with a runway length of 2,933 meters. Although the threshold height was good, the threshold speed was too high at 175 knots. The touchdown point was 782 meters beyond the touchdown zone, and the touchdown speed was 156 knots, which was a little fast. The touchdown rate was firm at -309 feet per minute. The runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 6.1 meters from the centerline.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 19 degrees Celsius, with a wind speed of 10 knots at 10 degrees. The crosswind was 2 knots, and the tailwind was 10 knots. The total landing distance was 2,386 meters, which accounted for 81% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was very good.
After landing, the aircraft taxied to the parking area from the runway, taking
The CJ Simulations R-Fal M successfully landed at VNKT Tribhuvan International Airport, but the pilot could have done a better job in terms of speed management. The aircraft touched down 782 meters beyond the touchdown zone, which is a significant distance from the ideal spot. This could have been avoided if the pilot had maintained a more suitable threshold speed, as the aircraft touched down at 175 kt, which is higher than expected.
The touchdown speed of 156 kt was also a bit fast, indicating that the pilot could have applied more gentle braking or flared the aircraft earlier to reduce the speed. The firm touchdown rate of -309 fpm suggests that the pilot may have been a bit too aggressive with the landing, which could have put unnecessary stress on the aircraft.
In terms of alignment, the runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 6.1 meters from the centerline, which is not ideal. However, the runway rollout alignment was very good, indicating that the pilot was able to maintain control of the aircraft during the rollout phase.
The local weather conditions were relatively calm, with a temperature of 19°C and a wind speed of 10 kt at 10°. The crosswind was minimal at 2 kt, and the tailwind was 10 kt, which could have contributed to the aircraft's slightly fast touchdown speed.
Overall, the pilot could have done a better job in terms of speed management and alignment, but the landing was still successful. The total landing distance of 2,386 meters was 81% of the runway length, which is acceptable.
