Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
Two stabilised approach gates, each with seven checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 5,000 ft of the approach.
Plan view — the first 5,000 ft of the 10,005 ft runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 1,530 ft touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 11 minutes and covered a distance of 2 nautical miles. The aircraft, a Boeing 737-800, then departed from runway 18R at KMEM Memphis International Airport. The takeoff distance was 5,184 feet, which accounted for 56% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 150 knots.
As the aircraft took off, it encountered local weather conditions with a temperature of 51°F and winds of 2 knots at 120°. The crosswind was 1 knot, and the headwind was also 1 knot. After departing from KMEM, the enroute climb started 1 mile south of the airport, where the aircraft climbed from 1,277 feet above sea level to 36,994 feet above sea level, an increase of 35,717 feet in 24 minutes, covering a distance of 146 nautical miles.
The enroute level cruise began 5 miles northwest of Calvert City, Kentucky, and lasted for 22 minutes, covering a distance of 187 nautical miles. The aircraft then started its enroute descent 2 miles south of Speedway, Indiana, where it descended from 36,583 feet above sea level to 1,970 feet above sea level, a decrease of 34,613 feet in 35 minutes, covering a distance of 202 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 22R at KDTW Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport was made from the northeast, heading 209.0° at 4 nautical miles and 1,314 feet above ground level. The landing was made on runway 22R, which had a length of 10,005 feet. The threshold height was good, and the threshold speed was slightly above the target at 146 knots.
The touchdown point was 173 feet beyond the touchdown zone, and the touchdown speed was 138 knots, which was a little fast. However, the touchdown rate was good at -155 feet per minute. The runway touchdown alignment was very good. The local weather conditions at KDTW were a temperature of 35°F and winds of 7 knots at 260°, with a crosswind of 6 knots and a headwind of 4 knots.
The total landing distance was 4,552 feet, which accounted for 45% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was perfect. The taxiing period from the runway to the parking took 3 minutes and covered less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 543 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 96 minutes. The aircraft used 7,886 pounds of fuel during the flight.
The Boeing 737-800 aircraft successfully landed at Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport (KDTW) on runway 22R. The final approach was initiated from the northeast, heading 209.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,314 feet above ground level (agl). The aircraft maintained a good alignment with the runway throughout the approach.
Upon touchdown, the aircraft's threshold height was satisfactory, but the threshold speed was slightly above the target speed of 146 knots. The touchdown point was located 173 feet beyond the designated touchdown zone, which is a relatively minor deviation. The touchdown speed of 138 knots was a bit faster than ideal, but the touchdown rate of -155 feet per minute (fpm) was within acceptable limits.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 35°F and a wind speed of 7 knots from a direction of 260°. This resulted in a crosswind of 6 knots and a headwind of 4 knots, which did not significantly impact the landing. The runway length of 10,005 feet was more than sufficient to accommodate the aircraft's landing distance.
The total landing distance of 4,552 feet was 45% of the available runway length, which is a relatively short distance. The runway rollout alignment was perfect, indicating that the aircraft's brakes were applied smoothly and effectively to bring the aircraft to a stop. Overall, the landing was considered successful, with a score of 99.9%.
