Work on the flare
Arrive slow and the sink rate at the threshold is already above schedule, the flare is short because there is no energy to extend it, and the touchdown is hard in a way that feels exactly like a late flare. Diagnosing a slow arrival as a late flare is the catastrophic misread: you respond by flaring earlier, which bleeds more speed, which makes the next one worse. The tiebreaker is threshold speed against VRef, not feel. Never diagnose a flare without it.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 2,378 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 30 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a departure roll from runway 35 at LPPR Francisco de Sá Carneiro Airport. The aircraft, a Cessna C172, took off with a takeoff distance of 363 meters, which is 12% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 63 knots. At the time of departure, the local weather conditions were a temperature of 15°C, with a wind speed of 1 knot at 270°, resulting in a crosswind of 1 knot and a headwind of 0 knots.
As the aircraft climbed out of the airport, it began its enroute climb 1 mile north of LPPR Francisco de Sá Carneiro Airport, Porto. The aircraft climbed from 993 feet above sea level to 3,729 feet above sea level, an increase of 2,736 feet in just 3 minutes, covering a distance of 5 nautical miles. This was followed by a level cruise that lasted 4 minutes and covered 8 nautical miles, starting 1 mile north of Vairao.
The aircraft then began another climb, this time overhead Faria, where it climbed from 4,630 feet above sea level to 5,291 feet above sea level, an increase of 661 feet in 2 minutes, covering a distance of 4 nautical miles. Another level cruise followed, lasting 2 minutes and covering 4 nautical miles, starting 1 mile northeast of Perelhal. The aircraft then began a final climb, 5 miles north of Vila Frescainha, where it climbed from 5,837 feet above sea level to 9,380 feet above sea level, an increase of 3,544 feet in 7 minutes, covering a distance of 11 nautical miles.
As the aircraft approached its destination, it began its descent 4 miles northwest of Ponte de Lima. The descent from 9,425 feet above sea level to 2,129 feet above sea level, a decrease of 7,297 feet in 14 minutes, covered a distance of 22 nautical miles. The final approach to runway 01 at LEVX Vigo Airport was made from the south, with a heading of 4.0° at 3 nautical miles and 1,281 feet above ground level.
The landing on runway 01 at LEVX Vigo Airport was successful, with a touchdown distance of 7 meters. However, the touchdown speed was a little fast at 63 knots, and the touchdown rate was firm at -362 feet per minute. The runway touchdown position was significantly misaligned by 27.7 meters from the centerline. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were a temperature of 16°C, with a wind speed of 1 knot at 270°, resulting in a crosswind of 1 knot and a headwind of 0 knots.
The total landing distance was 528 meters, which is 22% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was also misaligned by 21.4 meters from the centerline. After landing, the aircraft taxied to the parking area from the runway, taking 1 minute and covering less than 1 nautical mile.
The total flight distance was 58 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 40 minutes. The aircraft used 14 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The Cessna C172 aircraft successfully landed at LEVX Vigo Airport, but with some notable areas for improvement. The final approach was conducted from the south, heading 4.0° at 3 nautical miles and 1,281 feet above ground level (agl). The aircraft touched down on runway 01, which has a length of 2,378 meters.
The threshold height was satisfactory, but the threshold speed was slightly below the target at 63 knots. This could be a result of the pilot's decision to flare the aircraft slightly earlier than intended. The touchdown distance was good at 7 meters, indicating that the pilot maintained control of the aircraft during the landing. However, the touchdown speed of 63 knots was faster than desired, which may have contributed to a firm touchdown rate of -362 feet per minute (fpm).
One of the notable issues with this landing was the significant misalignment of the runway touchdown position, which was 27.7 meters off the centerline. This could be due to a combination of factors, including wind, pilot error, or a lack of practice in landing on this particular runway. The local weather conditions were relatively calm, with a temperature of 16°C and a wind speed of 1 knot at 270°.
The total landing distance was 528 meters, which is 22% of the runway length. This is a relatively short landing distance, indicating that the pilot was able to bring the aircraft to a stop quickly. However, the runway rollout alignment was also misaligned by 21.4 meters from the centerline, which could be a concern for safety.
Overall, while the landing was successful, there are areas for improvement, particularly in terms of maintaining a straight alignment with the runway centerline and achieving a more desirable touchdown speed. With practice and attention to these areas, the pilot can work towards achieving a more consistent and safe landing performance.
