Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 2,692 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 674 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 9 minutes and covered a distance of 1 nautical mile. The aircraft, a Virtualcol Embraer 190, then departed from runway 09 at EGSH Norwich Airport. The takeoff distance was 644 meters, which accounted for 35% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 145 knots.
As the aircraft took to the skies, it encountered local weather conditions of 7°C temperature and a wind speed of 12 knots at 60 degrees. The crosswind was 6 knots, while the headwind was 10 knots. The aircraft then began its enroute climb, starting overhead Spixworth in Norfolk, England. It climbed from an altitude of 1,102 feet above sea level to 31,107 feet, an increase of 30,005 feet, in 12 minutes and covering a distance of 66 nautical miles.
The enroute level cruise started 40 miles northwest of Nieuw-Haamstede in the Netherlands and lasted for 23 minutes, covering 186 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its first descent, starting 1 mile south of Ruppichteroth in Germany. It descended from 30,946 feet to 30,437 feet, a decrease of 509 feet, in 2 minutes and covering 13 nautical miles.
The aircraft then entered another enroute level cruise, starting overhead Oberdreis in Germany. This cruise lasted for 150 minutes, covering 1,267 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its second descent, starting 11 miles south of Korkuteli in Turkey. It descended from 32,913 feet to 26,093 feet, a decrease of 6,820 feet, in 5 minutes and covering 43 nautical miles.
The aircraft then entered another enroute level cruise, starting 12 miles southeast of Beykonak in Turkey. This cruise lasted for 38 minutes, covering 59 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its third descent, starting 61 miles west of Polis in Cyprus. It descended from 25,747 feet to 2,252 feet, a decrease of 23,495 feet, in 16 minutes and covering 83 nautical miles.
The aircraft then entered another enroute level cruise, starting 8 miles southwest of Pissouri in Cyprus. This cruise lasted for 4 minutes, covering 8 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its final approach to runway 29 at LCPH Paphos International Airport, flying from the east at a heading of 290.0 degrees and at an altitude of 1,360 feet above ground level.
The aircraft landed on runway 29, which had a length of 2,692 meters. The threshold speed was 114 knots, and the touchdown point was 250 meters beyond the touchdown zone. The touchdown speed was 109 knots, and the touchdown rate was fair at -241 feet per minute. The runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 3.1 meters from the centerline.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were 26°C temperature and a wind speed of 9 knots at 310 degrees. The crosswind was 3 knots, while the headwind was 8 knots. The total landing distance was 1,183 meters, which accounted for 44% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was very good.
The taxiing period from the runway to the parking took 3 minutes and covered less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 1,733 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 232 minutes. The aircraft used 7,565 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The Embraer 190 Qantas Link aircraft successfully landed at LCPH Paphos International Airport, achieving a score of 91.2%. The final approach to runway 29 was conducted from the east, heading 290.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,360 feet above ground level.
The aircraft touched down on the runway, with a threshold speed of 114 knots. However, the touchdown point was slightly beyond the designated touchdown zone, at a distance of 250 meters. The touchdown speed was recorded at 109 knots, which was slightly lower than the threshold speed. The touchdown rate was fair, at -241 feet per minute, indicating a relatively smooth landing.
The runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned from the centerline, by 3.1 meters. This may have been due to the crosswind component, which was 3 knots, or the headwind, which was 8 knots. The local weather conditions were favorable, with a temperature of 26°C and a wind speed of 9 knots at 310°.
The total landing distance was 1,183 meters, which accounted for 44% of the runway length. This is a relatively short landing distance, indicating that the aircraft was well-controlled during the approach and landing phases. The runway rollout alignment was very good, suggesting that the pilot maintained a stable and controlled descent during the landing.
Overall, the landing was successful, with a good score achieved. However, there were some minor deviations from the ideal touchdown point and runway alignment, which may have been due to the wind conditions.
