Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 1,633 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,633 m of the 2,989 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 669 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with the aircraft, an Airbus A319, taxiing from the parking area to the runway at RJSS Sendai Airport. This process took approximately 4 minutes and covered a distance of less than 1 nautical mile. The departure roll took place on runway 27, with the aircraft taking off after covering 51% of the runway's length. The takeoff distance was 1,526 meters, and the liftoff speed was 160 knots.
The local weather conditions at the time of departure were characterized by a temperature of 6 degrees Celsius and a wind speed of 9 knots from a direction of 269 degrees. This resulted in a crosswind of 1 knot and a headwind of 9 knots. The aircraft began its enroute climb 1 mile west of RJSS Sendai Airport Natori, rising from an altitude of 1,033 feet above sea level to 35,755 feet above sea level. This climb, which covered a distance of 78 nautical miles, took 19 minutes to complete.
Following the enroute climb, the aircraft entered a level cruise phase, which started 1 mile northeast of RJSI Iwate Hanamaki Airport Hanamaki. This phase lasted for 13 minutes and covered a distance of 100 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its enroute descent 9 miles southwest of RJSO JMSDF Ōminato Base Mutsu, descending from an altitude of 35,304 feet above sea level to 1,362 feet above sea level. This descent, which covered a distance of 108 nautical miles, took 24 minutes to complete.
The final approach to runway 19L at RJCC New Chitose Airport was made from the north, with the aircraft heading in a direction of 173.0 degrees at an altitude of 1,280 feet above ground level and a distance of 4 nautical miles from the runway. The landing took place on runway 19L, which had a length of 2,989 meters. The threshold height was good, and the threshold speed was also satisfactory at 131 knots.
The touchdown point was 251 meters beyond the touchdown zone, with a touchdown speed of 120 knots, which was considered good. However, the touchdown rate was fair at -207 feet per minute. The runway touchdown alignment was very good, and the local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of -3 degrees Celsius and a wind speed of 3 knots from a direction of 185 degrees. This resulted in a crosswind of 1 knot and a headwind of 3 knots.
The total landing distance was 1,550 meters, which was 52% of the runway's length. The runway rollout alignment was perfect, and the aircraft was able to taxi to the parking area from the runway in 6 minutes, covering a distance of 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 295 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 69 minutes. The aircraft used a total of 2,448 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The Airbus A319 aircraft successfully landed at RJCC New Chitose Airport, achieving a high score of 96.9%. The final approach to runway 19L was conducted from the north, with a heading of 173.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,280 feet above ground level (agl). The aircraft's approach was well-executed, with a good threshold height and a threshold speed of 131 knots, which is within the acceptable range.
Upon touchdown, the aircraft landed 251 meters beyond the touchdown zone, with a touchdown speed of 120 knots, which is also within the acceptable range. However, the touchdown rate of -207 feet per minute (fpm) was considered fair, indicating that the aircraft could have been brought down to the ground more smoothly. Despite this, the runway touchdown alignment was very good, indicating that the aircraft was properly aligned with the runway.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of -3°C and a wind speed of 3 knots from a direction of 185°. The crosswind component was minimal at 1 knot, while the headwind component was 3 knots, which helped to stabilize the aircraft during landing. The total landing distance of 1,550 meters was 52% of the runway length, which is a relatively short distance considering the aircraft's size and weight.
The rollout alignment after touchdown was perfect, indicating that the aircraft's brakes were applied smoothly and effectively, and the pilot maintained control of the aircraft throughout the landing process. Overall, the landing was considered successful, with the aircraft achieving a high score and demonstrating good piloting skills.
