Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 1,848 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,848 m of the 2,756 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 1,044 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 9 minutes and covered less than 1 nautical mile. The aircraft, an Airbus A319, then departed from runway 26 at LOWI Innsbruck Airport. The takeoff distance was 1,021 meters, which accounted for 54% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 133 knots, and the local weather conditions were characterized by a temperature of -4°C, a wind speed of 3 knots at 279°, with a crosswind of 1 knot and a headwind of 3 knots.
As the aircraft climbed out of Innsbruck Airport, it began its enroute climb, which started overhead the airport and reached an altitude of 19,124 feet above sea level. The climb was a significant increase of 16,174 feet in just 10 minutes, covering a distance of 26 nautical miles. Following the climb, the aircraft entered a level cruise, which started 4 miles southeast of Racines, Italy, and lasted for 25 minutes, covering a distance of 157 nautical miles.
The enroute descent began 7 miles northeast of Torriglia, Italy, and was a descent from 19,153 feet to 3,888 feet above sea level, a decrease of 15,265 feet in 11 minutes, covering a distance of 17 nautical miles. The aircraft then entered another level cruise, which started overhead Santa Margherita Ligure, Italy, and lasted for 2 minutes, covering a distance of 5 nautical miles. The final descent began overhead Bogliasco, Italy, and was a descent from 3,335 feet to 1,317 feet above sea level, a decrease of 2,018 feet in 3 minutes, covering a distance of 6 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 28 at LIMJ Genoa Cristoforo Colombo Airport was from the east, with a heading of 285.0° at 4 nautical miles and 1,284 feet above ground level. The landing on runway 28 was successful, with a runway length of 2,756 meters. However, the threshold height was excessively over target, while the threshold speed was good at 129 knots. The touchdown point was 587 meters beyond the touchdown zone, with a touchdown speed of 124 knots, which was good, but a touchdown rate of -405 feet per minute was considered hard. Additionally, the runway touchdown position was misaligned by 9.3 meters from the centreline.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 11°C, a wind speed of 3 knots at 50°, with a crosswind of 3 knots and a tailwind of 2 knots. The total landing distance was 1,726 meters, which accounted for 63% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was slightly misaligned by 14.9 meters from the centreline. The taxiing period from the runway to the parking took 4 minutes and covered less than 1 nautical mile.
In total, the flight distance was 218 nautical miles, taking 65 minutes, and the aircraft used 3,109 kilograms of fuel.
The Airbus A319 aircraft successfully landed at LIMJ Genoa Cristoforo Colombo Airport, but with some notable deviations from the ideal landing parameters. The final approach was initiated from the east, heading 285.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,284 feet above ground level (agl). The aircraft touched down on runway 28, which has a length of 2,756 meters.
Upon analysis, it appears that the threshold height at 121 feet agl was excessively over the target, indicating that the aircraft descended more than necessary before touching down. However, the threshold speed of 129 knots was within the acceptable range, suggesting that the pilot maintained a suitable speed during the final approach. The touchdown speed of 124 knots was also good, indicating that the pilot managed to slow down the aircraft effectively before touchdown.
Despite the good touchdown speed, the touchdown rate was hard at -405 feet per minute (fpm), which may indicate that the pilot could have applied a smoother touchdown. Furthermore, the touchdown point was 587 meters beyond the touchdown zone, which may have been due to the pilot's decision to extend the landing distance. The runway touchdown position was also misaligned by 9.3 meters from the centreline, which could have been caused by a slight deviation in the pilot's alignment during the final approach.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were relatively calm, with a temperature of 11°C and a wind speed of 3 knots at 50°. The crosswind and tailwind components were minimal, with 3 knots and 2 knots respectively. The total landing distance of 1,726 meters was 63% of the runway length, which is within the acceptable range.
During the rollout, the aircraft's alignment was slightly misaligned by 14.9 meters from the centreline, which may have been caused by the pilot's decision to maintain a steady speed during the rollout phase. Overall, while the landing was successful, there were some notable deviations from the ideal landing parameters, which could be addressed through further training and practice. The score of 75.9% suggests that the pilot could improve their landing skills to achieve a more precise and controlled touchdown.
