Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
Two stabilised approach gates, each with seven checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 1,663 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 394 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
Taxiing from the parking area to the runway at KBNA Nashville International Airport took 6 minutes and covered a distance of approximately 1 nautical mile. The ATR 72 then began its departure roll on runway 20C, utilizing 1,149 meters or 47% of the runway's length to achieve liftoff at a speed of 131 knots. Local weather conditions at the time of departure included a temperature of 24°C, with a wind speed of 18 knots from a direction of 220°, resulting in a 7-knot crosswind and a 17-knot headwind.
As the aircraft climbed away from KBNA, it began its enroute climb 1 mile south of the airport, ascending from an initial altitude of 1,363 feet above sea level to a cruising altitude of 16,916 feet, an increase of 15,553 feet in 15 minutes and covering a distance of 54 nautical miles. The enroute level cruise phase commenced 3 miles northeast of Franklin, Kentucky, and lasted for 14 minutes, during which the aircraft covered a distance of 70 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its enroute descent 6 miles southwest of Loretto, Kentucky, descending from 16,493 feet to 3,014 feet in 9 minutes and covering 42 nautical miles. The final enroute level cruise phase started 2 miles northeast of Lawrenceburg, Kentucky, and lasted for 11 minutes, covering 31 nautical miles.
As the aircraft approached its destination, KFFT Capital City Airport, it began its final descent 5 miles northeast of Frankfort, Kentucky, descending from 3,026 feet to 2,232 feet in 2 minutes and covering 3 nautical miles. The aircraft then lined up for a landing on runway 25, with a threshold speed of 117 knots, slightly above the target speed. The touchdown distance was 391 meters, and the touchdown speed was 106 knots, both of which were within acceptable limits. The touchdown rate was an excellent -62 feet per minute, and the runway touchdown alignment was very good. After landing, the aircraft taxied to the parking area, taking 2 minutes and covering less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 208 nautical miles, and the aircraft used 520 kilograms of fuel during the flight, which lasted a total of 62 minutes.
The aircraft touched down on runway 25 at KFFT Capital City Airport with a satisfactory approach quality, maintaining a steady descent from 1,409 feet above ground level (agl) at 4 nautical miles from the threshold. The threshold height was good, and the threshold speed of 117 knots was slightly above the target, but still within acceptable limits. The aircraft's touchdown characteristics were impressive, with a touchdown speed of 106 knots and an excellent touchdown rate of -62 feet per minute (fpm).
The touchdown distance of 391 meters was good, and the aircraft remained aligned with the runway centerline, with a runway touchdown alignment that was very good. The local weather conditions, with a temperature of 16 degrees Celsius and a wind of 7 knots at 185 degrees, contributed to a relatively smooth landing. The crosswind of 6 knots and headwind of 4 knots were well-managed by the pilot, resulting in a stable approach and touchdown.
The rollout phase was satisfactory, with the aircraft coming to a stop within 748 meters, which is 45% of the runway length. However, the runway rollout alignment was slightly misaligned by 9.0 meters from the centerline. Despite this minor deviation, the overall landing performance was excellent, with a score of 95.8%. The pilot's skills and experience were evident in the smooth and controlled manner in which the aircraft was brought to a stop on the runway.
