Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 5,000 ft of the approach.
Plan view — the first 5,000 ft of the 9,018 ft runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 1,277 ft touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 8 minutes and covered a distance of 2 nautical miles. The aircraft, a Boeing 737-700, then departed from runway 22 at KHOU William P Hobby Airport in Houston, Texas. The takeoff distance was 2,063 feet, which accounted for 27% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 153 knots.
The local weather conditions at the time of departure were characterized by a temperature of 84 degrees Fahrenheit and winds of 6 knots at 80 degrees. The crosswind was 3 knots, while the tailwind was 4 knots. The aircraft then began its enroute climb, starting 1 mile southwest of KHOU William P Hobby Airport and ascending from 1,081 feet above sea level to 37,087 feet above sea level, a total increase of 36,005 feet. This climb took 20 minutes and covered a distance of 132 nautical miles.
Following the enroute climb, the aircraft entered a level cruise phase, which began 101 miles southeast of Galveston, Texas. This phase lasted for 125 minutes and covered a distance of 1,029 nautical miles. The aircraft then started its enroute descent, which began 5 miles southwest of MNFC Punta Huete Airport in Nicaragua. The descent took 21 minutes and covered a distance of 109 nautical miles, during which the aircraft descended from 36,865 feet above sea level to 1,551 feet above sea level.
The final approach to runway 07 at MRLB Guanacaste Airport was made from the southwest, with a heading of 70.0 degrees at 4 nautical miles and 1,284 feet above ground level. The landing was made on runway 07, which had a length of 9,018 feet. The threshold height was good, and the threshold speed was slightly above the target at 132 knots. The touchdown distance was good at 1,285 feet, but the touchdown speed was a little fast at 126 knots. The touchdown rate was fair at -298 feet per minute, and the runway touchdown alignment was perfect.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were similar to those at the time of departure, with a temperature of 84 degrees Fahrenheit and winds of 6 knots at 80 degrees. The crosswind was 1 knot, while the headwind was 5 knots. The total landing distance was 4,082 feet, which accounted for 45% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was perfect. The taxiing period from the runway to the parking took 2 minutes and covered a distance of less than 1 nautical mile.
The total flight distance was 1,278 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 182 minutes. The aircraft used a total of 14,305 pounds of fuel during the flight.
The Boeing 737-700 aircraft successfully landed at MRLB Guanacaste Airport, achieving a high score of 98.4%. The final approach to runway 07 was conducted from the southwest, with a heading of 70.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,284 feet above ground level (agl). The aircraft's approach was well-executed, with a good threshold height and a slightly above-target threshold speed of 132 knots.
Upon touchdown, the aircraft's performance was satisfactory, with a touchdown distance of 1,285 feet, which is within acceptable limits. However, the touchdown speed of 126 knots was slightly faster than the target speed, indicating that the pilot may have needed to apply more braking force upon touchdown. The touchdown rate of -298 feet per minute (fpm) was fair, suggesting that the aircraft's descent was not excessively steep.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were favorable, with a temperature of 84°F and a gentle wind of 6 knots from a direction of 80°. The crosswind component was minimal at 1 knot, while the headwind component was 5 knots, which helped to reduce the aircraft's ground speed and improve its approach stability.
The total landing distance of 4,082 feet was 45% of the runway length, indicating that the aircraft had sufficient stopping distance to come to a safe stop. The runway rollout alignment was perfect, with the aircraft tracking the centerline of the runway throughout its rollout phase. Overall, the landing was well-executed, with the pilot demonstrating good control and decision-making skills throughout the approach and touchdown phases.
