Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 3,662 m of the approach.
Plan view — the full 3,662 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 2,927 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 10 minutes and covered a distance of 2 nautical miles. The aircraft, a Boeing 777-300, then departed from runway 07C at Hong Kong International Airport (VHHH). The takeoff distance was 2,472 meters, which accounted for 72% of the runway length. The liftoff speed was 188 knots.
As the aircraft took to the skies, it encountered local weather conditions of 31 degrees Celsius and a wind speed of 7 knots at 300 degrees. The crosswind was 5 knots, while the tailwind was 4 knots. The enroute climb started 2 miles north of Tung Chung, where the aircraft ascended from 1,012 feet above sea level to 34,144 feet above sea level, an increase of 33,132 feet in 18 minutes and covering 123 nautical miles.
The enroute level cruise began 60 miles west of Pratas Island, where the aircraft maintained a steady altitude for 143 minutes, covering a distance of 1,165 nautical miles. The aircraft then encountered another enroute climb, this time from 34,342 feet above sea level to 36,356 feet above sea level, an increase of 2,014 feet in 2 minutes and covering 13 nautical miles. The enroute level cruise resumed 8 miles northwest of Naha Airport, where the aircraft maintained a steady altitude for 231 minutes, covering a distance of 1,821 nautical miles.
The aircraft then encountered another enroute climb, this time from 36,560 feet above sea level to 38,638 feet above sea level, an increase of 2,078 feet in 3 minutes and covering 27 nautical miles. The enroute level cruise resumed 11 miles northeast of Alice Springs Airport, where the aircraft maintained a steady altitude for 91 minutes, covering a distance of 730 nautical miles.
As the aircraft approached its destination, it began its descent from 38,227 feet above sea level to 2,243 feet above sea level, a decrease of 35,984 feet in 27 minutes and covering 153 nautical miles. The final approach to runway 16 at Melbourne International Airport (YMML) was from the northeast, with a heading of 349.0 degrees at 0 nautical miles and 1,805 feet above ground level.
The landing on runway 16 was notable for its excessive touchdown speed of 196 knots, which was higher than the threshold speed. The touchdown point was also excessively long, using more than 75% of the available runway. The touchdown speed at 165 knots was too fast, but the touchdown rate was fair at -247 feet per minute. The runway touchdown alignment was very good, despite the challenging weather conditions of 24 degrees Celsius and a wind speed of 14 knots at 159 degrees. The crosswind was 3 knots, while the headwind was 14 knots.
The total landing distance was 3,914 meters, which was 107% of the runway length. The runway rollout alignment was excessively misaligned by 66.4 meters from the centerline. The taxiing period from the runway to the parking took 1 minute and covered a distance of 1 nautical mile.
In total, the flight covered a distance of 4,046 nautical miles, taking 542 minutes and consuming 67,436 kilograms of fuel.
The Boeing 777-300 aircraft has successfully landed at Melbourne International Airport, but the landing was not without its issues. The aircraft was approaching the runway from the north east, heading 349.0° at an altitude of 1,805 feet above ground level (agl) and at a distance of 0 nautical miles from the runway. The final approach was conducted with a good threshold height, but the threshold speed was excessively high at 196 knots, which is a concern for safe landing operations.
Upon touchdown, the aircraft used more than 75% of the available runway, indicating that the landing was excessively long. The touchdown speed of 165 knots was also too fast, which can increase the risk of runway excursion or other safety issues. However, the touchdown rate of -247 feet per minute (fpm) was fair, suggesting that the aircraft was able to slow down relatively quickly after touchdown.
The local weather conditions at the time of the landing were favorable, with a temperature of 24°C and a headwind of 14 knots at 159°. The crosswind was minimal at 3 knots, which reduced the risk of crosswind-related issues during the landing. The total landing distance of 3,914 meters was 107% of the available runway length, which is slightly above the recommended threshold.
One of the most significant issues with this landing was the runway rollout alignment, which was excessively misaligned by 66.4 meters from the centerline. This can increase the risk of runway excursion or other safety issues, particularly if the aircraft is not able to maintain its alignment during the rollout phase.
Overall, while the Boeing 777-300 aircraft was able to land safely at Melbourne International Airport, there were several issues with the landing that need to be addressed to improve the safety and efficiency of future landings. These issues include excessive threshold speed, long touchdown distance, high touchdown speed, and misaligned runway rollout.
