Work on the flare
Arrive slow and the sink rate at the threshold is already above schedule, the flare is short because there is no energy to extend it, and the touchdown is hard in a way that feels exactly like a late flare. Diagnosing a slow arrival as a late flare is the catastrophic misread: you respond by flaring earlier, which bleeds more speed, which makes the next one worse. The tiebreaker is threshold speed against VRef, not feel. Never diagnose a flare without it.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,042 m of the approach.
Plan view — the full 1,042 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 363 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a departure roll from runway 28 at EDFJ Lager Hammelburg Airfield, a small airfield located in Hammelburg, Bavaria, Germany. The Cessna C172 aircraft took off with a takeoff distance of 242 meters, which accounted for 44% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 52 knots, and the local weather conditions were characterized by a temperature of 15 degrees Celsius and a gentle wind of 5 knots at 91 degrees.
As the aircraft climbed away from the airfield, it began its enroute climb 1 mile west of EDFJ Lager Hammelburg Airfield. The climb was steep, with an increase of 1,232 feet in just 3 minutes, covering a distance of 6 nautical miles. The aircraft leveled off at an altitude of 2,694 feet above sea level, marking the start of the enroute level cruise.
The cruise phase of the flight lasted for 48 minutes, during which the aircraft covered a distance of 82 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its enroute descent, starting overhead the town of Kirchheim unter Teck in the state of Baden-Wuerttemberg, Germany. The descent was rapid, with a decrease of 639 feet in just 2 minutes, covering a distance of 1 nautical mile.
As the aircraft approached its destination, EDST Hahnweide Airfield, it began its final approach to runway 12 from the northwest. The aircraft was flying at an altitude of 228 feet above ground level and a heading of 124.0 degrees, 1 nautical mile from the runway threshold. The local weather conditions were similar to those at the departure airfield, with a temperature of 15 degrees Celsius and a gentle wind of 5 knots at 92 degrees.
The landing was successful, with a touchdown distance of 357 meters, which was good considering the runway length of 1,042 meters. The touchdown speed was 54 knots, and the touchdown rate was -187 feet per minute, both of which were good. However, the runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned from the centreline by 14.1 meters. The total landing distance was 515 meters, which accounted for 49% of the runway.
After landing, the aircraft taxied to the parking area, taking less than 1 minute and covering a distance of less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 93 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 58 minutes. The aircraft used 29 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The Cessna C172 aircraft successfully landed at EDST Hahnweide Airfield, but with some notable deviations from the ideal approach and landing parameters. The final approach was initiated from the north-west, heading 124.0° at 1 nautical mile and 228 feet above ground level (agl). The aircraft touched down on runway 12, which has a length of 1,042 meters.
The threshold height at 81 feet agl was significantly above the target, indicating that the aircraft was higher than desired when reaching the runway threshold. Additionally, the threshold speed was well above the target at 66 knots, suggesting that the aircraft was traveling faster than necessary when reaching the threshold. However, the touchdown distance of 357 meters was considered good, and the touchdown speed of 54 knots was also within acceptable limits. Furthermore, the touchdown rate of -187 feet per minute (fpm) was good, indicating a controlled descent.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were relatively calm, with a temperature of 15°C and a wind speed of 5 knots at 92°. The crosswind component was minimal at 3 knots, while the headwind component was 4 knots. Despite these favorable conditions, the runway touchdown position was misaligned by 14.1 meters from the centerline, which may have been due to factors such as wind or pilot error.
The total landing distance of 515 meters was 49% of the runway length, which is a relatively short distance considering the aircraft's size and weight. However, the runway rollout alignment was slightly misaligned by 14.8 meters from the centerline, which may indicate some issues with the aircraft's directional control during the rollout phase.
Overall, while the landing was successful, there were some notable deviations from the ideal approach and landing parameters. These deviations may be due to a combination of factors, including pilot error, wind conditions, and aircraft performance.
