Flight Score
Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
Two stabilised approach gates, each with seven checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
At the 1,000 ft gate: speed above the reference speed.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 3,297 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 212 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 3 minutes and covered less than 1 nautical mile. The aircraft, a Boeing 737-700, then departed from runway 12 at SBFN Fernando de Noronha Airport. The takeoff distance was 980 meters, which accounted for 53% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 147 knots, and the local weather conditions were characterized by a temperature of 30 degrees Celsius and a wind speed of 5 knots at 100 degrees.
As the aircraft climbed out of the airport, it began its enroute climb, which started 1 mile east of SBFN Fernando de Noronha Airport. The climb took 41 minutes and covered a distance of 318 nautical miles, during which the aircraft ascended from 1,042 feet above sea level to 38,764 feet above sea level, an increase of 37,722 feet. The enroute level cruise then began, lasting 142 minutes and covering a distance of 1,039 nautical miles. The cruise took place at a latitude of 0.8733732 and a longitude of -29.9785477.
As the aircraft approached its destination, it began its enroute descent, which started 56 miles southwest of Goderich, Sierra Leone. The descent took 19 minutes and covered a distance of 92 nautical miles, during which the aircraft descended from 38,938 feet above sea level to 1,342 feet above sea level, a decrease of 37,597 feet. The final approach to runway 06 at GUCY Conakry International Airport was made from the southwest, heading 50.0 degrees at 4 nautical miles and 1,265 feet above ground level.
The landing on runway 06 at GUCY Conakry International Airport was successful, with a touchdown distance of 213 meters, which was 21% of the runway length. The touchdown speed was 118 knots, and the touchdown rate was -199 feet per minute. The runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 4.2 meters from the centerline. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 30 degrees Celsius and a wind speed of 2 knots at 340 degrees.
After landing, the aircraft taxied to the parking, which took 1 minute and covered less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 1,454 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 200 minutes. The aircraft used 8,438 kilograms of fuel during the flight. Overall, the flight was successful, with good threshold height, threshold speed, touchdown distance, touchdown speed, and touchdown rate. The runway rollout alignment was also very good.
The Boeing 737-700 successfully landed at Conakry International Airport, with a score of 99.4%. The aircraft approached the runway from the southwest, heading 50.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,265 feet above ground level (agl). The pilot maintained a good threshold height, which is a critical aspect of a safe landing.
Upon touchdown, the aircraft's speed was 124 knots, which is within the acceptable threshold speed range. The touchdown distance of 213 meters was also satisfactory, indicating that the pilot had sufficient control over the aircraft during the landing phase. The touchdown speed of 118 knots was within the acceptable range, and the touchdown rate of -199 feet per minute (fpm) was also good, indicating a smooth and controlled descent.
However, there was a slight deviation in the runway touchdown position, with the aircraft touching down 4.2 meters off the centerline. This deviation is relatively minor and may not have had a significant impact on the overall safety of the landing. The local weather conditions at the time of the landing were favorable, with a temperature of 30°C and a gentle wind of 2 knots at 340°.
The crosswind component was minimal at 2 knots, and the headwind component was 1 knot, which suggests that the pilot had to contend with a relatively small wind shear during the landing phase. The total landing distance of 678 meters was 21% of the runway length, which is a relatively short distance considering the aircraft's size and weight.
The runway rollout alignment was very good, indicating that the pilot had maintained control over the aircraft during the post-landing phase and had successfully brought the aircraft to a stop within a short distance. Overall, the landing was successful, and the pilot's skills and experience were evident in the smooth and controlled manner in which the aircraft was brought to a stop.
