Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 152 m above the runway. The 305 m gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,999 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,999 m of the 2,301 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 997 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 5 minutes and covered less than 1 nautical mile. The aircraft, an Airbus A320, then departed from runway 29 at LQSA Sarajevo International Airport. The takeoff distance was 1,510 meters, which accounted for 76% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 151 knots.
As the aircraft climbed out of Sarajevo, it began its enroute climb, starting 1 mile northwest of the airport. The climb took 17 minutes and covered 65 nautical miles, with the aircraft ascending from 778 meters above sea level to 10,969 meters above sea level, an increase of 10,191.1 meters. The local weather conditions at the time were characterized by a temperature of 25 degrees Celsius.
Following the enroute climb, the aircraft entered a level cruise phase, starting 2 miles southwest of Glamoc, Bosnia and Herzegovina. This phase lasted for 42 minutes and covered 296 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its enroute descent, starting 2 miles northwest of LIQM Aviosuperficie Passo del Tonale Ponte di Legno, Italy. The descent took 18 minutes and covered 91 nautical miles, with the aircraft descending from 10,966 meters above sea level to 1,925 meters above sea level, a decrease of 9,041.0 meters.
The aircraft then entered another level cruise phase, starting 2 miles southeast of Baretswil, Switzerland. This phase lasted for only 3 minutes and covered 7 nautical miles. The final approach to runway 29 at LSMD Dübendorf Air Base was made from the east, with the aircraft heading 288.0 degrees at 4 nautical miles and 638.2 meters above ground level.
The landing on runway 29 at LSMD Dübendorf Air Base was successful, with the touchdown point being 590 meters beyond the touchdown zone. The touchdown speed was 141 knots, which was good, and the touchdown rate was also good at -0.8 meters per second. However, the runway touchdown position was misaligned by 14.0 meters from the centerline. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 19 degrees Celsius.
The total landing distance was 1,927 meters, which accounted for 84% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was slightly misaligned by 13.1 meters from the centerline. The taxiing period from the runway to the parking took 3 minutes and covered less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 466 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 92 minutes. The aircraft used 3,044 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The Airbus A320 aircraft successfully landed at LSMD Dübendorf Air Base, but with some notable deviations from the ideal landing parameters. The final approach was initiated from the east, heading 288.0° at an altitude of 638.2 meters above ground level (agl) and 4 nautical miles from the runway. The aircraft touched down on runway 29, which has a length of 2,301 meters.
However, the threshold height at 23.5 meters agl was significantly above the target, indicating that the aircraft was higher than desired when reaching the runway threshold. Additionally, the threshold speed of 158 knots was also above the target, suggesting that the aircraft may have been slightly too fast when reaching the threshold. Despite these deviations, the touchdown speed of 141 knots was within the acceptable range, and the touchdown rate of -0.8 meters per second was also good.
One of the notable issues with this landing was the misalignment of the runway touchdown position, which was off-centerline by 14.0 meters. This could be due to a variety of factors, including pilot error or issues with the aircraft's navigation systems. The total landing distance of 1,927 meters was 84% of the runway length, which is within the acceptable range.
During the rollout, the aircraft's alignment was slightly off-centerline by 13.1 meters, which could be a concern for safety and control. The local weather conditions at the time of the landing were mild, with a temperature of 19°C. Overall, while the landing was successful, there were some notable deviations from the ideal parameters that could be addressed through further training or adjustments to the aircraft's systems.
