Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
Two stabilised approach gates, each with seven checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway. They are the approach's score: the checks passed out of the checks that ran.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 5,000 ft of the approach.
Plan view — the first 5,000 ft of the 10,001 ft runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 1,950 ft past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The aircraft taxied from the parking area to runway 18L at KDFW, a movement that lasted 14 minutes and covered 2 nm.
The departure roll on runway 18L used 5,639 ft, representing 42 % of the runway, and liftoff was achieved at 151 kt. Ambient conditions were 97 °F with a 1 kt wind from 47°, a 1 kt crosswind and a 1 kt tailwind.
Climb began approximately 1 mile southwest of KDFW, with the aircraft climbing from 1,480 ft MSL to 35,002 ft MSL, an increase of 33,522 ft accomplished in 20 minutes while covering 134 nm.
Level cruise started about 1 mile northeast of Hallsville, Texas, and continued for 43 minutes, during which 352 nm were flown.
Descent was initiated 8 miles east of Mount Vernon, Alabama, descending from 34,999 ft MSL to 1,316 ft MSL, a loss of 33,684 ft over 21 minutes and a distance of 108 nm.
Final approach to runway 01 at KVPS proceeded from 1,321 ft AGL to 49 ft AGL in 99 seconds, with the aircraft scoring on the stabilisation gates.
The aircraft touched down on runway 01, whose length is 10,001 ft, with a threshold speed of 146 kt. Touchdown occurred 612 ft beyond the touchdown zone at a speed of 139 kt and a vertical rate of minus 146 fpm; alignment was very good. Local weather reported a temperature of 92 °F, a 1 kt wind from 69°, a 1 kt crosswind and a 1 kt headwind.
Runway rollout covered a distance of 4,290 ft, representing 43 % of the runway, and alignment during rollout was perfect.
After landing, the aircraft taxied to the parking area, a taxi-in of 11 minutes that spanned 3 nm.
In total, the flight covered 606 nm, required 111 minutes of elapsed time, and consumed 10,020 lbs of fuel.
The Boeing 737-800 conducted a stabilised approach to runway 01 at KVPS Destin-Fort Walton Beach Airport, with gear, flaps, sink rate, glideslope, centreline and speed all within limits at the 1,000 ft gate; the descent covered 1,321 ft AGL to 49 ft AGL in 99 seconds and earned full marks on the stabilisation gates.
At threshold the aircraft maintained a good height and a threshold speed of 146 kt, meeting the required parameters for a clean flare.
Touchdown occurred 612 ft beyond the designated touchdown zone, with a touchdown speed of 139 kt that was judged good, a smooth vertical rate of minus 146 fpm, and very good runway alignment at the point of contact.
The rollout used 4,290 ft, representing 43 % of the 10,001-ft runway, and alignment during rollout was perfect.
To convert the already high 98.7 % score into a perfect result, the crew should aim to achieve touchdown nearer the 1,000-ft (300 m) aim point, which will reduce the landing distance while preserving the smooth speed and rate already demonstrated.
