Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

Two stabilised approach gates, each with five checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
At the 500 ft gate: sink rate above what the glideslope needed.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 2,685 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 411 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 4 minutes and covered less than 1 nautical mile. The aircraft, a Boeing 737-800, then departed from runway 11L at SBBR Presidente Juscelino Kubitschek International Airport in Brasília, Brazil. The takeoff distance was 2,131 meters, which accounted for 67% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 162 knots.
As the aircraft took off, it encountered local weather conditions of 34°C temperature and a 3-knot wind at 180°. The crosswind was 3 knots, while the headwind was 0 knots. After departing from the airport, the enroute climb started 1 mile east of the airport, with the aircraft climbing from 4,401 feet above sea level to 34,021 feet above sea level, an increase of 29,620 feet in 20 minutes, covering 127 nautical miles.
The enroute level cruise began 3 miles southeast of SBUD Alto Horizonte Airport in Uruacu, Goias, Brazil, and lasted for 107 minutes, covering 794 nautical miles. The aircraft then started its enroute descent 57 miles southeast of Borba in Amazonas, Brazil, descending from 33,781 feet above sea level to 1,514 feet above sea level, a decrease of 32,266 feet in 29 minutes, covering 134 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 11 at SBEG Eduardo Gomes International Airport was made from the west, heading 91.0° at 4 nautical miles and 1,251 feet above ground level. The landing on runway 11 was successful, with the touchdown distance being good at 414 meters. The touchdown speed was 154 knots, which was slightly fast, but the touchdown rate was excellent at -98 feet per minute. The runway touchdown alignment was perfect, and the runway rollout alignment was also perfect.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were 32°C temperature and a 2-knot wind at 60°, with a crosswind of 1 knot and a headwind of 2 knots. The total landing distance was 1,452 meters, which accounted for 54% of the runway. The taxiing period from the runway to the parking took 3 minutes and covered less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 1,063 nautical miles, taking 169 minutes, and the aircraft used 6,944 kilograms of fuel.
The Boeing 737-800 aircraft successfully landed at SBEG Eduardo Gomes International Airport, achieving a high score of 99.1%. The final approach to runway 11 was conducted from the west, with a heading of 91.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,251 feet above ground level (agl).
The aircraft touched down on the runway with a good threshold height, indicating a smooth and controlled descent. However, the threshold speed was above the target speed, coming in at 160 knots. This may have been due to the aircraft's approach configuration or the pilot's decision to prioritize a safe touchdown over a precise speed target.
The touchdown distance of 414 meters was within acceptable limits, demonstrating the pilot's ability to control the aircraft's descent and maintain a stable approach. However, the touchdown speed of 154 knots was slightly faster than desired, which may have resulted in a slightly longer rollout distance.
The touchdown rate of -98 feet per minute (fpm) was excellent, indicating a smooth and controlled touchdown. The runway touchdown alignment was perfect, with the aircraft aligning itself with the centerline of the runway.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 32°C and a wind speed of 2 knots from a direction of 60°. The crosswind component was minimal at 1 knot, while the headwind component was 2 knots. These conditions were favorable for the landing, with the headwind helping to stabilize the aircraft's approach.
The total landing distance of 1,452 meters was 54% of the runway length, indicating a relatively short rollout distance. The runway rollout alignment was perfect, with the aircraft maintaining its alignment with the centerline of the runway throughout the rollout phase.
Overall, the landing was a success, with the pilot demonstrating excellent control and precision throughout the approach and touchdown phases. The high score of 99.1% reflects the pilot's skill and experience in landing the Boeing 737-800 at SBEG Eduardo Gomes International Airport.
