Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

Two stabilised approach gates, each with five checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 5,000 ft of the approach.
Plan view — the first 5,000 ft of the 6,707 ft runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 1,761 ft past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
Departing YBCS Cairns International Airport, the Airbus A320 began its journey with a taxiing phase that lasted 14 minutes and covered a distance of 3 nautical miles. As the aircraft reached the runway, it initiated its departure roll on runway 15, utilizing 5,468 feet, or 53% of the runway's length, to achieve liftoff at a speed of 164 knots. The local weather conditions at the time of departure featured a temperature of 83°F, with a wind of 18 knots at 147°, resulting in a 3-knot crosswind and an 18-knot headwind.
As the aircraft climbed to its enroute cruise altitude, it began its ascent from 946 feet above sea level to 37,010 feet, an increase of 36,064 feet, in 19 minutes and covering 118 nautical miles. The climb phase concluded overhead Edge Hill, after which the aircraft entered its enroute level cruise phase, lasting 84 minutes and covering 616 nautical miles, 23 miles northeast of Palm Island. The aircraft then initiated its descent, reducing its altitude from 36,932 feet to 6,009 feet, a decrease of 30,923 feet, in 16 minutes and covering 92 nautical miles. Following a brief level cruise phase near Thornlands, the aircraft continued its descent, decreasing its altitude from 6,011 feet to 1,323 feet, a decrease of 4,688 feet, in 7 minutes and covering 21 nautical miles.
As the aircraft approached YBCG Gold Coast Airport, it initiated its final approach to runway 14 from the northwest, aligning with the runway at 4 nautical miles and 1,281 feet above ground level. The aircraft landed on the runway, utilizing 3,711 feet, or 55% of the runway's length, and achieving a touchdown speed of 121 knots. The touchdown point was 386 feet beyond the touchdown zone, and the runway touchdown alignment was very good. Following a smooth rollout, the aircraft taxied to the parking area, concluding its journey with a total flight distance of 869 nautical miles, a flight time of 141 minutes, and a fuel consumption of 12,384 pounds.
The aircraft touched down on runway 14 at YBCG Gold Coast Airport with a good threshold height, indicating a well-executed approach. The threshold speed of 131 kt was also satisfactory, demonstrating the pilot's ability to manage the aircraft's descent and airspeed. As the aircraft made contact with the runway, it touched down at a speed of 121 kt, which was within the acceptable range.
The touchdown point was located 386 ft beyond the touchdown zone, which, although not ideal, was still within the acceptable limits. The touchdown rate of -213 fpm was fair, suggesting that the pilot could have managed the descent more effectively to achieve a smoother touchdown. However, the runway touchdown alignment was very good, indicating that the pilot maintained a consistent heading and alignment with the runway during the approach.
Following touchdown, the aircraft rolled out perfectly along the centreline, demonstrating excellent control and coordination. The total landing distance of 3,711 ft, which accounted for 55% of the runway length, was acceptable. Overall, the landing was considered to be of high quality, with a score of 98.3% reflecting the pilot's skill and attention to detail. The local weather conditions, with a temperature of 70 °F and a headwind of 11 kt, also contributed to the successful outcome of the landing.
