The Beechcraft Baron G58 is the current production version of Beechcraft's long-body twin-piston Baron, a six-seat, low-wing cabin twin built by Textron Aviation. It combines the long-running Baron 58 airframe with a modern Garmin G1000 NXi glass cockpit, making it a popular choice for owner-pilots wanting classic twin-engine handling with contemporary avionics. As the final derivative of a design lineage stretching back to 1961, it represents the modern endpoint of one of general aviation's most enduring light twins.

Overview

The Beechcraft Baron G58 is a twin-engine, low-wing piston aircraft manufactured by Beechcraft (now part of Textron Aviation). It is the long-body member of the Baron family, seating up to six occupants and certified for single-pilot operation. The G58 is the modern production version of the Baron 58, distinguished from its forebears principally by its Garmin G1000 NXi avionics suite, an improved passenger cabin and revisions to selected airframe details. It has been in manufacture from 2006 to the present.

History & Development

The Baron line traces its origins to the Beechcraft 95 Travel Air, which married the Bonanza fuselage to the tail control surfaces of the T-34 Mentor military trainer. To create the Baron, Beechcraft fitted the Travel Air with the fully-swept vertical stabilizer of the Debonair, streamlined the engine nacelles, and installed six-cylinder engines, introducing the first Baron 55 in 1961 with two 260 hp Continental IO-470-L engines. The type sold well against rivals such as the Piper Aztec and Cessna 310, and Beechcraft continued to develop it through numerous sub-variants over the following decades. The long-body Baron 58 succeeded the earlier short-body 55 and 56TC series, and although the turbocharged 58TC and 58P variants were discontinued in 1984 and 1985 respectively, the normally-aspirated Baron 58 remained in production. The G58, featuring a glass cockpit, is the current iteration of this long-body Baron and was on display at EAA AirVenture Oshkosh in 2019 to mark the 50th anniversary of the Model 58's first flight. By the end of 2025, total Baron production across all variants stood at 7,011 aircraft, though Textron Aviation announced in November 2025 that production of the Baron, alongside the related Bonanza, will end once existing orders are fulfilled, with parts and support to continue indefinitely.

Design & Specifications

The G58 is a twin-engine, low-wing piston aircraft with a cabin configured for six occupants as standard and certified for single-pilot operation. It is fitted with two Continental IO-550 engines rated at 300 hp each, driving the aircraft in the long-body Baron 58 airframe. The cockpit is equipped with the Garmin G1000 NXi integrated avionics suite, providing primary flight and navigation displays in place of the analogue panels of earlier Barons. The cabin measures 4 ft 1 in high, 3 ft 6 in wide and 10 ft 7 in long, with one interior and one exterior storage compartment provided for personal items. Beechcraft's own warranty terms cover the aircraft structure - fuselage, empennage, wing and control surfaces - for five years, with other components covered for two years or 800 operating hours, whichever occurs first.

Performance & Handling

The G58 has a maximum operating altitude of 18,500 ft and a normal cruise speed of 197 knots (227 mph). With seats full, its range is quoted at 152 nautical miles (175 statute miles). Ground performance figures include a balanced field length of 2,242 ft and a landing distance of 2,736 ft.

Variants

The G58 sits within the long-body Baron 58 branch of the family, distinct from the earlier short-body Baron 55 and Baron 56TC lines. Turbocharged long-body derivatives, the 58TC and 58P, were produced before being discontinued in 1984 and 1985 respectively, leaving the normally-aspirated Baron 58 in continuous production. The G58 is the modern evolution of that normally-aspirated Baron 58, updated with the Garmin G1000 NXi glass cockpit, a refined passenger cabin and revised airframe details, and stands as the final production variant before Beechcraft's announced end of Baron manufacture.

Operational Use

The Baron family has served for decades as a light twin for private owners, business operators and flight training, with total production across all variants reaching 7,011 aircraft. The G58 has also been offered in specialised roles beyond conventional civil transport; Beechcraft conducted a demonstrator tour for a Baron G58 ISR (intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance) configuration in 2014, illustrating the type's adaptability for mission-specific use alongside its core role as an owner-flown personal and business aircraft.

In the Simulator

For a simulator pilot, the G58 offers the classic handling traits of the long-body Baron airframe combined with a fully modern glass cockpit built around the Garmin G1000 NXi suite, giving a very different instrument-flying experience from earlier analogue-panel Barons despite sharing much of the same airframe. Multi-engine training emphasis is placed on systems management and single-engine operation, reflecting the aircraft's robust handling characteristics and the operational considerations pilots need to master when flying a capable, higher-performance piston twin of this class.
