The Beechcraft Baron 58 is the long-body member of Beechcraft's classic twin-engined piston family, a low-wing monoplane light aircraft used for private and business transport. Developed from the Bonanza-derived Beechcraft Travel Air and Baron 55, the type carries the ICAO designator BE58 and has remained a mainstay of the light-twin market for decades, making it a familiar and approachable type for simulator pilots exploring general aviation twins.
The Beechcraft Baron 58 is a civil utility, twin-engined piston aircraft of low-wing monoplane configuration, built by Beechcraft (now under Textron Aviation). It carries the ICAO type designator BE58, is classified as an L2P type (landplane with two piston engines) and falls into wake turbulence category L/G. Within the wider Baron family, which also includes the short-body 55 and 56 models, the 58 is distinguished as the long-body variant.
The Baron line traces its ancestry to the Beechcraft 95 Travel Air, which combined the fuselage of the Bonanza with the tail control surfaces of the T-34 Mentor military trainer. To create the Baron, the Travel Air's tail was replaced with that of the Debonair, the engine nacelles were streamlined and six-cylinder engines were fitted, with the type first flying on 29 February 1960 and entering production in 1961. The Baron family proved a lasting commercial success, remaining in continuous production for decades; total production across all Baron variants reached 7,011 aircraft by the end of 2025. In November 2025, Textron Aviation announced that production of the Baron, together with the related Bonanza, would end once existing orders had been fulfilled, though the company stated it would continue to provide parts and support for the type indefinitely.
The Baron family is built around a low-wing monoplane airframe derived from the Bonanza-based Travel Air, with a fully-swept vertical stabiliser adopted from the Debonair and streamlined engine nacelles housing horizontally-opposed six-cylinder piston engines. The Baron 58 is the long-body model within the range, as distinct from the short-body Baron 55 and 56 variants. Published dimensions for the type give a wingspan of 11.5 metres and a length of 9.1 metres, with a maximum take-off weight of around 2.5 tonnes.
The Baron family comprises three basic body types: the Baron 55 and Baron 56, both short-body designs, and the Baron 58, which uses a lengthened, long-body fuselage. The Model 55 line ran from 1961 to 1983 with 3,651 aircraft built across its A55, B55, C55, D55 and E55 sub-variants, each bringing progressive changes such as increased engine power, lengthened noses, revised flap configurations and improved avionics; the Baron 58 represents the subsequent long-body evolution of this same family lineage.
The Baron family has served primarily in the civil light-twin market, used for private and business transport. The type also had a historical military user in the United States Army.
