The Diamond DA40 NG is the diesel-powered evolution of Diamond Aircraft's popular DA40 single-engine touring and training aircraft, built around a composite airframe and a FADEC-controlled engine. Certified in April 2010 as a multiuse variant of the original DA40, it combines the type's established handling qualities with improved fuel efficiency, making it a natural choice for flight schools and touring pilots wanting a modern, easy-to-manage single.
The DA40 NG is a low-wing, cantilever monoplane of composite construction with fixed tricycle landing gear and a T-tail, following the same basic airframe layout as the original Diamond DA40. Described as a multiuse variant of the DA40 family, it was certified in April 2010 and was intended to bring together the practicality, performance and operating economy that had made its predecessors successful, while updating the powerplant for greater efficiency.
The DA40 lineage began with the prototype DA40-V1, which first flew on 5 November 1997, with production of the original DA40 beginning in 2000. The DA40 NG was developed as a multiuse variant of this established design and received certification in April 2010, building on more than a decade of in-service experience with the earlier DA40 models.
The airframe retains the composite, low-wing, T-tailed configuration of the earlier DA40 variants, with fixed tricycle landing gear. The defining change in the NG model is its powerplant: an Austro Engine AE 300 delivering 170 hp, managed by a full authority digital engine control (FADEC) system that monitors and controls both engine and propeller functions to reduce pilot workload. Cabin appointments include a choice of interior trims with premium leather upholstery, near-flat adjustable pilot seatbacks with lumbar support, electrically adjustable rudder pedals, and electric air conditioning.
The DA40 NG sits within a broader family of DA40 models produced over the type's history, representing the multiuse, diesel-engined development of the baseline DA40 design certified in April 2010.
The blend of practicality, performance and operating economy built into the DA40 NG has made it well suited to touring and general aviation use, continuing the role played by its DA40 predecessors.
