The Icon A5 is an American amphibious light-sport aircraft designed and produced by Icon Aircraft, conceived from the outset as a recreational 'adventure' machine rather than a conventional touring aeroplane. With its folding wings, flying-boat hull, and spin-resistant handling, it competes as much with powersports vehicles as with other light aircraft, making it a distinctive and approachable type for sim pilots interested in low-and-slow amphibious flying.

Overview

The Icon A5 is a two-seat amphibious light-sport aircraft (LSA) manufactured by Icon Aircraft of the United States. It is configured as a high-wing flying-boat-type amphibian with a carbon-fibre airframe and retractable undercarriage, built specifically for recreational flying rather than transport or utility work. Icon Aircraft has positioned the A5 as a rival to powersports vehicles such as ATVs, motorcycles, watercraft and snowmobiles rather than to other aeroplanes, reflecting its origins outside the traditional general aviation buyer base.

History & Development

A concept prototype was constructed between 2007 and 2008 and made its first flight on July 9, 2008, after which the aircraft underwent a staged flight test programme, including a first phase of 27 flights completed by January 2009 covering water handling, followed by a second phase refining aerodynamics and handling. In 2011 an updated spin-resistant wing, using a cuffed design with multiple proprietary airfoils varying along the span, was flight tested and finalised in February 2012, allowing the design to meet FAR Part 23 spin-resistance certification criteria. The cockpit interior was designed with input from BMW designers and the exterior by Nissan designer Randy Rodriguez, with Lotus Engineering later brought in to develop an automotive-style interior and lightweight component manufacturing. In July 2012 Icon applied for an FAA rule exemption to raise the aircraft's weight above the standard 650 kg amphibian LSA limit, arguing that the spin-resistant structure required a gross weight of 1,680 lb (762 kg); the FAA granted this exemption in July 2013 after requesting further test data. Production tooling construction began in December 2012, with Cirrus Aircraft contracted in August 2012 to produce composite airframe components at its Grand Forks, North Dakota facility for shipment to Icon's Tehachapi, California plant for final assembly. The first production aircraft, built between January and June 2014, first flew on July 7, 2014, and was unveiled publicly at EAA AirVenture Oshkosh on July 27, 2014. The first customer aircraft flew in May 2015, with deliveries beginning after an FAA audit was completed on June 11, 2015; by June 2015 the company held 1,250 orders and planned to build 500 aircraft per year by 2017. By 2019 100 A5s had been delivered, though company legal and financial issues slowed production after 2016. As of December 2025, 221 A5s had been built, with production continuing.

Design & Specifications

The A5 is a high-wing amphibious monoplane with a carbon-fibre airframe, an integrated flying-boat hull, and retractable landing gear, seating two occupants side by side in an enclosed cockpit 46 inches (116.8 cm) wide. Power comes from a single Rotax 912 iS Sport engine of 100 hp (75 kW), an electronically fuel-injected variant of the widely used Rotax 912 family that accepts 100LL, unleaded UL91/94, or 91-octane automotive fuel; it drives a pusher propeller mounted behind the cockpit, originally in a three-bladed configuration with a four-blade propeller introduced as an option from 2024 alongside a gross weight increase. The wings fold aft for storage and road transport, a task Icon states can be completed by one person in about two minutes. Removable side windows can be taken out by hand and stowed in the baggage area, and the low instrument panel beneath a panoramic canopy is intended to give an unusually open, immersive field of view. Seawings platforms fitted to the wingtips provide stability on the water and serve as boarding points from a dock or from the water itself, with removable tips that can be replaced if damaged. All exterior lighting uses LEDs, including custom landing and taxi light assemblies. Standard equipment includes an angle-of-attack indicator, an unusual fitment in general aviation aircraft, and avionics options range from a removable Garmin Aera 796 GPS up to a Garmin G3X Touch flight display with ADS-B Out as standard, ADS-B In as an option, and an optional two-axis autopilot managed through a Garmin GMC 507 control panel. A whole-airframe ballistic parachute system is available and is mandatory on US-registered A5s under the terms of Icon's weight exemption. The 2024 update raised gross weight by 60 lb and increased useful load to 490 lb.

Performance & Handling

The A5 is engineered around benign, forgiving handling rather than outright performance, with a cuffed wing and multiple proprietary airfoils varying along its span specifically developed to make the aircraft spin-resistant and to satisfy FAR 23.221(a)(2) certification criteria. Icon advertises a range of over 420 nautical miles combined with low fuel burn, positioning the A5 as well suited to short recreational trips rather than long-distance travel. Standard LSA rules limit amphibious aircraft to a maximum gross weight of 1,430 lb, but Icon's 2013 FAA exemption permitted a maximum gross weight of up to 1,680 lb based on the aircraft's spin-resistant design, though production aircraft were built to a lower maximum of 1,510 lb before the 2024 update added 60 lb to that figure. The aircraft is capable of operating from grass strips, beaches, and smooth runways as well as water, and is described as fully able to land and taxi at conventional airports and FBOs alongside its amphibious capability.

Variants

The principal production version is the ICON A5 Light Sport model built to US S-LSA rules, aimed at pilots operating under light-sport aircraft regulations, which permit qualification with as little as 20 hours of flight training compared with a minimum of 40 hours for a private pilot certificate. A separate FAA-Type Certified Edition, certified in the primary category, is offered for customers taking ownership outside the United States, in countries that do not recognise the light-sport aircraft category, expanding the aircraft's international market.

Operational Use

The A5 is marketed exclusively for recreational and adventure flying rather than commercial, commuter, or utility roles, with Icon explicitly framing it as competing with power-sports vehicles such as ATVs, motorcycles, watercraft, and snowmobiles rather than with other aircraft. Icon has reported that around 35 percent of its customers were not pilots prior to purchase, reflecting the company's deliberate effort to draw in buyers from outside the traditional general aviation market. The type has built an owner community of more than 200 aircraft across 13 countries, supported by an independent owners' and pilots' association, and Icon offers dedicated flight training programmes intended to help new and experienced pilots alike adapt to the A5's amphibious operating environment. Complementary accessories such as a purpose-built enclosed trailer and an inflatable dock system have been developed to support ownership and water-based operations.

Owners and reviewers describe the A5 as notably easy to fly, with docile, forgiving handling attributed directly to its spin-resistant wing design and benign stall characteristics, qualities that translate into an approachable, low-workload feel appropriate for pilots exploring amphibious operations for the first time. The panoramic canopy, low instrument panel, and removable side windows are designed to maximise the sense of open-air immersion, giving the flying experience an emphasis on visibility and sensation over speed or complex systems management. The type's simple single-engine, fixed powerplant setup, integrated hull, and folding-wing convenience make it a straightforward aircraft to operate across grass strips, water, and conventional runways alike, reflecting Icon's stated design goal of prioritising accessible, engaging flight over traditional performance metrics.
