The Experimental Darkstar is a fictional hypersonic testbed aircraft created for the film Top Gun: Maverick, brought to life as a full-scale movie prop with technical input from Lockheed Martin's Skunk Works, and subsequently added to Microsoft Flight Simulator as a playable high-speed experimental jet. It has no basis as a flying real-world type, but its inclusion in the sim lets pilots attempt extreme-speed flights reminiscent of the SR-71 Blackbird's spiritual successors, making it a novelty type for high-Mach exploration rather than a conventional aircraft.

Overview

The Darkstar is not a genuine flying aircraft but a movie prop built for the 2022 film Top Gun: Maverick, depicting a hypothetical hypersonic reconnaissance and test aircraft in the lineage of the Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird. It was designed with technical advice from Lockheed Martin's Skunk Works, the organisation behind the U-2, A-12, SR-71 Blackbird, F-117 Nighthawk and the proposed SR-72 hypersonic unmanned aircraft, with the explicit aim of making the prop as plausible as possible against real hypothetical hypersonic designs. In Microsoft Flight Simulator it appears as an experimental aircraft capable of extremely high Mach numbers, giving simmers a chance to fly a machine conceived purely for on-screen spectacle rather than operational service.

History & Development

The Darkstar prop was created for Top Gun: Maverick, in which the character Captain Pete Mitchell, callsign Maverick, flies the aircraft to the edge of Mach 10. Skunk Works specialists, drawing on decades of experience with the U-2, A-12, SR-71, F-117 and the SR-72 concept, advised the production team during construction of the prop to lend it credibility as a plausible successor to the Blackbird. After filming, the physical prop made a rare public appearance at the Edwards AFB Aerospace Valley Expo in October 2022, before being placed on permanent display at the Palm Springs Air Museum in California, where it was welcomed with a water cannon salute from two fire trucks.

Design & Specifications

No production airframe exists; the Darkstar is a single static movie prop rather than a flying test article, so conventional dimensions, weights and powerplant details are not established. Its design was shaped to look convincing as a hypersonic testbed in the visual tradition of Skunk Works black programmes, with the production team seeking accuracy comparable to genuine hypothetical hypersonic aircraft concepts of the type Skunk Works has studied.

Performance & Handling

Within its fictional premise the Darkstar is depicted reaching the edge of Mach 10 in the film. In the simulator, pilots have reported that exceeding roughly Mach 2.5 while at too low an altitude can trigger a critical damage event, and some users have struggled to reach even Mach 5 without the aircraft breaking up or beginning to shake violently shortly after take-off. Simulator behaviour has also been reported to change across software updates, with the aircraft becoming more fragile after some patches, and certain in-sim settings, such as spoilers being left extended, the g-effect setting being switched from jet pilot to civil aviation, or the g-suit effect being left off, have been identified by users as contributing to unwanted critical damage during high-speed flight.
