The Cirrus SR22 Carbon Edition is a design-and-appearance trim option applied to Cirrus Aircraft's best-selling single-engine piston, offered across the naturally aspirated SR22 and turbocharged SR22T lines built at Duluth, Minnesota. It brings sports-car-inspired styling, two-tone leather and Alcantara bolstered seating and jet-black cosmetic detailing to what is otherwise the standard, CAPS-parachute-equipped SR22 airframe, making it a popular choice for owners who want the type's usual glass-cockpit sophistication with a sportier look on the ramp.

Overview

The Cirrus SR22 is a single-engine, four- or five-seat composite low-wing monoplane built by Cirrus Aircraft of Duluth, Minnesota since 2001, developed from the smaller SR20 with a larger wing, greater fuel capacity and a more powerful engine. The Carbon Edition is not a separate airframe variant but one of Cirrus's factory appearance packages - alongside Platinum and Rhodium - available on both the naturally aspirated SR22 and the turbocharged SR22T. It pairs the standard SR-series engineering, including the Cirrus Airframe Parachute System (CAPS) and side-stick flight controls, with a sports-car-inspired cosmetic treatment inside and out.

History & Development

The SR22 was certified in November 2000 and entered production in 2001 as a more powerful derivative of the SR20. The type has been developed through successive generations: the G2 in 2004 (fuselage modifications), the G3 in 2007 (modified wing and landing gear), the G5 in 2013 (raised gross weight to 3,600 lb and a standard five-seat cabin; there was no G4), the G6 in 2017 (major avionics and lighting upgrades), the G7 announced in January 2024 (overhauled interior and avionics closer to the Vision Jet cockpit, plus safety and engine-start improvements and automatic fuel selection), and the G7+ introduced in May 2025, which added the Safe Return emergency autoland system as the first such feature in a piston aircraft. A turbocharged SR22 Turbo was introduced in 2006 using a Tornado Alley turbonormalizing kit installed under a Supplemental Type Certificate. Within this lineage, the Carbon design suite has been offered as a factory appearance option on later-generation SR22 and SR22T aircraft, including G6 GTS models, giving owners a bold, sports-car-inspired styling choice alongside the Platinum and Rhodium suites.

Design & Specifications

The SR22 is a cantilever low-wing monoplane of composite construction with fixed tricycle landing gear, a castering nose wheel and steering by differential braking on the mains. It uses side-stick flight controls (a 'side yoke') rather than a conventional yoke, and every SR22 carries the Cirrus Airframe Parachute System as standard equipment. The naturally aspirated SR22 is powered by a nose-mounted Continental IO-550-N producing 310 hp, while the turbocharged SR22T uses a Continental TSIO-550-K delivering 315 hp with twin turbonormalizers, twin intercoolers, built-in oxygen and a Hartzell three-blade (later optional four-blade) lightweight composite propeller. Published dimensions for the SR22T are a wingspan of 38 ft 4 in (11.68 m), length of 26 ft (7.92 m), height of 8 ft 11 in (2.7 m), cabin width of 49 in (124 cm) and cabin height of 50 in (127 cm). Weights are a maximum ramp weight and maximum takeoff weight of 3,600 lb, a basic empty weight of 2,354 lb (1,065 kg) and a maximum zero-fuel weight of 3,400 lb. The Carbon Appearance package overlays this standard airframe with jet-black vents, carbon-appearance instrument panel lobes, bold exterior graphics and two-tone premium leather and Alcantara bolstered seating, distinguishing it visually from the Platinum and Rhodium design suites without altering the underlying structure, engine or systems.

Performance & Handling

Performance figures published for the SR22T, the model on which the Carbon Edition is most commonly specified, include a maximum cruise speed of 213 KTAS, a maximum operating altitude of 25,000 ft, a stall speed with flaps of 60 KCAS, a climb rate of 1,203 ft/min (6.1 m/sec), a takeoff distance of 1,517 ft (462 m), a takeoff distance over a 50 ft obstacle of 2,080 ft (634 m) and a landing ground roll of 1,178 ft (359 m). Cirrus also quotes a maximum range of 1,021 nm at 55 percent power and a useful load of 1,238 lb for the SR22T. In 2022 Cirrus announced speed improvements to the G6 airframe, adding roughly 9 knots to cruise speed. A 2012 Flying magazine review described the SR22 as 'the most sophisticated single-engine civilian airplane ever built and by a long shot,' reflecting its combination of glass cockpit avionics, envelope-protection systems and side-stick handling.

Variants

The core SR22 lineage runs through the G2 (2004), G3 (2007), G5 (2013, with increased gross weight and a standard five-seat cabin), G6 (2017), G7 (2024) and G7+ (2025, with Safe Return autoland) generations, alongside the turbocharged SR22T introduced in 2006. A training-oriented TRAC variant, unveiled in September 2019, features a simplified interior, more durable seating, a backseat radio transmit switch and simulated retractable-gear controls for instructional use, despite retaining fixed landing gear. The Carbon Edition itself is an appearance and trim option, distinct from these generational and turbo/non-turbo variants, sitting alongside the Platinum and Rhodium design suites and combinable with packages such as Cirrus Executive, Cirrus Awareness, Cirrus Advantage and Certified Flight into Known Ice; when combined with these on the SR22T it forms the range-topping GTS specification.

Operational Use

The SR22 series has been the world's best-selling general aviation airplane every year since 2003, and with 8,246 units delivered between 2001 and 2024 (8,785 through 2025) it is the most-produced general aviation aircraft of the 21st century, accounting for nearly half of the entire piston aircraft market when combined with SR20 production. Its whole-airframe parachute system has earned it the nickname 'the plane with the parachute' and has been credited with contributing to its market success. The type is used predominantly for personal and owner-flown cross-country travel, with the SR22T's turbocharging and oxygen system extending its practical range to higher, cooler cruising altitudes, and Carbon Edition examples in particular have been marketed as luxury cross-country personal aircraft. A 2003-model SR22 is displayed in the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum's 'Thomas W. Haas We All Fly' general aviation exhibition, which opened in 2022.

In the Simulator

Flying the SR22 means adapting to side-stick 'side yoke' controls rather than a conventional yoke, combined with a suite of envelope-protection features that shape its handling character: Electronic Stability and Protection subtly corrects unusual attitudes even with the autopilot disengaged, flap airspeed protection guards against mishandled flap deployment, and integrated stick shakers on both side yokes provide tactile stall warning. The NASA-derived cuffed wing leading edge is intended to reduce the likelihood of spin entry following an inadvertent stall, which together with the standard CAPS parachute gives the type a distinctly safety-oriented feel compared with more traditional light singles. A 2012 review calling it 'the most sophisticated single-engine civilian airplane ever built' underlines the depth of its Garmin-based glass cockpit and automation, which stands out to pilots transitioning from simpler analogue types, while the turbocharged SR22T variant's higher cruise speeds and 25,000 ft operating ceiling give it cross-country performance well beyond that of typical fixed-gear piston singles.
