The Blackwing BW635 is a Swedish-built, carbon-fibre ultralight aircraft from Blackwing Sweden AB, offering side-by-side seating for two beneath a wind-tunnel-shaped airframe powered by the Rotax 915iS. Designed for pilots who want glider-like efficiency combined with genuine cross-country performance, it has become known for its record-setting speed and has been recreated for Microsoft Flight Simulator in partnership with the manufacturer itself.
The BW635 is a two-seat, single-engine ultralight built by Blackwing Sweden AB, manufactured in Eslov near Malmo in the Skane region of Sweden. It is a carbon-fibre design with side-by-side seating roughly 120 centimetres wide, intended to give recreational pilots high-end performance and efficiency within the ultralight category. It is offered with either fixed landing gear (FG) or retractable landing gear (RG).
The BW635 was designed by Niklas Anderberg, an aerospace engineer who previously worked at Saab and set out to build his own aircraft. Blackwing developed the type as a next-generation ultralight airframe, and it was publicly shown at Aero Friedrichshafen in 2019. Blackwing AB subsequently received both DULV certification and Swedish national certification for the BW635 in its fixed-gear (FG) and retractable-gear (RG) forms.
The airframe is built primarily from carbon fibre and was shaped through wind tunnel testing to maximise aerodynamic efficiency, resulting in a very light structure with an empty weight of around 325 kilograms. The cabin uses side-by-side seating roughly 120 centimetres wide, a configuration chosen to combine practicality with tandem-aircraft-level performance. Power comes from a Rotax 915iS engine, a turbocharged four-cylinder unit rated up to 141 horsepower, driving an electrically controlled variable-pitch propeller.
The BW635 is quoted with a stall speed of 38 knots and a never-exceed speed (Vne) of 173 knots. The design has been used to set FAI world speed records for the ultralight class, reflecting the low weight and efficient carbon-fibre airframe. Despite its ultralight certification, the aircraft is capable of sustained high cruise speeds well beyond typical types in its category.
Blackwing offers the BW635 in two landing gear configurations: the BW635 FG with fixed landing gear, and the BW635RG with retractable landing gear, the latter being the version most widely seen and recreated for flight simulation.
As a certified ultralight under both DULV and Swedish national rules, the BW635 is flown primarily in the recreational and sport-flying sector across Europe, appearing at events such as Aero Friedrichshafen. Its combination of low empty weight and turbocharged Rotax power has made it notable for record attempts within the ultralight speed class.
Orbx produced the Blackwing BW635RG for Microsoft Flight Simulator directly in partnership with Blackwing Sweden AB, with the manufacturer helping tune the model's flight characteristics to match the real aircraft across its performance envelope. The simulated aircraft reproduces the type's 38-knot stall speed and 173-knot Vne, along with the Rotax 915iS powerplant and its electrically controlled propeller, giving simmers a faithful sense of flying one of the fastest ultralights available.
